As I have said,

Nobody shoots it in serious competition, have shot at Raton in target rifle since 1996, no one has ever been in contention at midrange or Creedmoor. It’s been absent from the winners circle, oddly enough those that advocate it been a good cartridge for long range, they too have been absent to Raton to compete in Creedmoor or midrange, 25 plus years.

Kevin, you might look at getting a couple of the Norma 9.3 x74 cases and see if they could be expanded and stretched to fit your chamber.
But honestly other than a hunting rifle, I'm of the notion you might be well ahead of the game to have that rifle rebarreled to something a bit more usable in the venues you shoot.

The 9.3x 74R cases are a little thin in the head. I made some 40-70s and need a shim to get consistant ignition. They fit the rim cut really nice but are 20 tho thin. Or thereabouts.

So, what bullet would stabilize in an original 11.2lb 1885 40-90SS? CotW lists the twist rate at 18 but I have not had the chance to check it but it looks about 1.5 turns in the 30 inch bbl. I have been trying the 400gr Lyman but not having much success. I only have other molds for the 40-82 Win. which is much lighter. Guess I will have to try those.

Most of those old 40 cartridges were using something between 250 and 330 grain bullets.
