40-90 sharps straight

Post by krgriggs »

Does anyone shoot this caliber for competition black powder. If so I need to message you. I have a lot of questions. First one is bullet diameter, is it different from 40-65. Is it a pure paper patch cartridge or can you use greasers. My cartridge of the world says diameter is .403 which is different from my 40-65

If you have an original rifle, then the 0.403 dimension maybe correct. Best to do a chamber cast to verify what it is.
If you have a standard Shiloh Sharps rifle, the 40 caliber barrels are 0.400 bore x 0.408 groove diameter.

Keep on hav'n fun!

Yes it’s a modern gun, seems to not have typical rifling wondering if it’s a paper patch bore.

Kevin absolutely no one shoots a 40-90 straight in competition.

Too much powder, lots of fouling and heat to deal with, oh and recoil. The cartridge was originally designed by Winchester as an express load with 200 odd grain bullets. Never was a Sharps chambering.

I wipe so fouling is not an issue, thought it would be gods for long range Bptr and gong shooting

That will entirely depend on the barrel twist.

I bought a Shiloh in 40-90 and a High Wall in 40-50 bottle neck and both have RWS on the barrel so they are Ron Snover barrels, 40-90 has a 16 twist

Won’t shoot anything well over 410 grs or so.

Buffalo arms might have some.
I have seen an article in one of the old Forrest and Stream papers that the Sharps Rifle Co.introduced a .40-90 bn in 1876 It was also Called the Sharps 2-5/8” I think it was based on the .45-2.6 shell necked down.
Orville has a Sharps .40-3-1/4 straight that I shot and it is a very good shooter

There’s nothing wrong with a 40-90 SS it was Freund bro’s favorite cartridge. I have one with Shiloh’s standard chamber, sense I shoot pp bullets, I had Dave Casey make some thick wall brass, using a 380 grain pp bullet with 90 grain of Fg it shot great, Kurt watched me put 7 shots in about 7 inches at 700 yards.

Shooting grease groove bullets in a sharps is new technology and just a passing fad.
