New batch of 1 1/2 Swiss

Post by John Bly »

I got a new batch of 1 1/2 Swiss and it is 5% heavier than the lot I'm using up. My 61 gr measure throws 64 grains. I'm thinking just load the same volume until I can get out to do a ladder test. Any thoughts? The current lot was lighter than the previous lot so what I have now is more like what I had several years ago.

What lot# is it?

For me whatever weight I need to get whatever lot of Swiss at the same compression seems to work. 81 grains of a 2018 lot I have or 85 grains of a 2019 lot gives the same compression. The 19 lot is 30fps slower than the 18 but accuracy seems to be the same.

What's a new batch? 10 lbs.? 25lbs ? 2 cases? All the same lot numbers? At the price and availibility problems I wouldn't do a lot of testing. Just my 2 cts worth..bobw

I just go by weight, and I don't care about compression, it is what it is...

It is an odd lot that I mixed together. I had 9 lbs of various lots that I had won at matches. Some from 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2021. I bought 6 lbs of a lot from June 2021 and mixed it all together. I'll go with the same volume or compression. It weighs what it weighs. With the scarcity of primers I won't do a lot of load testing. I've got some ammo with old lot and I'll make up some with the new lot and shoot them on paper for a comparison.

John,

Try the method described in the BPC News; "Incremental load development". I've worked up loadstar news lots of powder for 3 rifles now, and have been able to find very good loads with no more than 25 rounds in each case.

INterestingly, like John Bly,
I have been using a "Lot" , I call my Swiss 1.5 Blend of 04/19, that was a blend of several older lots of 1 to 5 pounds that I had accumulated,
total about 11 pounds. Works well, to use up those "orphan" lots. I am getting good performance in my 40-65 and the 38-50 with this "LOT"
so that I can use up the orphans to good use and not jump around with loads for each of those individual lots.
