Missouri Hunt

Post by RMulhern »

Opening day of the Youth Hunt this past weekend in Missouri I had occasion to witness my Grandson Joel Banks take this nice big bodied 8 pt. buck in Chariton County. Joel, age 11, had to sit in my lap to be able to rest his rifle on the window ledge of the stand as the chair he was sitting in was too low for him to be able to get a good position. I saw this buck coming across a bean field out to our front and I told Joel....."Slip over here and sit in my lap as here comes our buck"! The buck was chasing a doe, both went down into a deep ditch and came up out of the ditch and ran about 40 yards closer to our stand, all the time Joel is following the buck with his rifle. I told Joel..."Wait until they stop".....which they did and I then told Joel...."Kill 'em!" He did! At the crack of the rifle...the buck took off in a dead run (literally) and piled up about 30 yards later!! Needless to say, Joel's chest rode rather far out the remainder of the weekend! This was Joel's first Missouri buck and I wouldn't have traded this for a smooth ten grand!!

Missouri Buck

Dean

This was a good day! I've been working with Joel since he was 5 years old in reference to marksmanship training and he's taken to it very well! Joel is a straight A student in school and he listens very well and then applies what he's been told! He's rather 'stocky' in build; short arms...but not fat....such that he uses a rifle that his Dad had made for him with a short length of pull which fits him to a T! He has 'chosen' as his BPCR a rifle I have hanging in the Bears Den which he will be introduced to this coming year in actual shooting thereof but right now...well..he's got to 'grow' a little more so it will fit him better. He got this buck shooting his .243 Winchester using some Nosler 100 gr. Partition bullets I had loaded. The bullet 'busted' the buck on both sides and he hit on his nose after a mad run of about 30 yards or so.

Shooting grease groove bullets in a sharps is new technology and just a passing fad.

Instead of teaching the boy bad habits like scope sights and bolt action rifles with smokeless powder, Why don't you get him a 40-65 that fits him and load a 248 grain Lyman 403169 bullet with 55 grains of 2f? That is a deer killing machine at 1355fps, shoots almost flat at 200 yards and has about as much recoil as a Benjamin pump. I know his eyesight is not so bad that he can't shoot irons.

Rick, he needs to learn that it's not just about killing deer. It won't hurt him to come in empty handed a couple of times. If you don't start him shooting AND HUNTING with a BPCR, who will? Think about it . His dad sure isn't going to. And if you don't, THERE WILL BE NO ONE ELSE TO TEACH HIM. He has several good deer under his belt, and putting it off and putting it off isn't helping him. Do it now--quit wasting seasons. Next year might not be here for any of us. You ain't getting any younger, you know. Shoot straight, rdnck.

Wonder if he will want to trade his scoped rifle for a BPCR to shoot deer with? I don't think I ever would have, given the choice as a kid. MD

When he gets more experience and can understand trajectory problems and grows a little more to the rifle....I'll teach him all he needs to know but I don't intend to start this early! Nothing could be worse.....than to put him into a rifle that doesn't fit him right and then have him 'blow a shot' at a nice animal. Joel is a smart kid and he won't have any problem making a change if that's what he wants to do later on! I've had many a good day shooting a scoped rifle myself.....and I don't intend to quit just because someone else thinks that everyone needs to shoot a BPCR!
