BP Shotgun slug velocities

Post by Ted Kramer »

I shot a string of ten rounds from my '97 Winchester over my chronograph this morning. The load was 85 gr GOEX 2ffg, 1/8" over powder card wad, 1/2" lubed fiber wad, another 1/8" card wad under the 1 ounce slug, roll crimped in a 2 3/4" Fiocchi paper hull. Here's the numbers:
#1-1130
#2-1109
#3-1083
#4-1099
#5-1112
#6-1096
#7-1081
#8-1076
#9-1098
#10-1101

Sorry Lazer, no bruises. I slipped a rubber recoil pad on the shotgun before I started. Actually, the recoil is way less violent than the factory smokeless loads. The '97 isn't a light weight either so that helps.

I fought fire in Alaska (bush) from '74 through '85. The '97 was a favorite bear gun 'cause you could fully load it, place the hammer in half-cock and visually see what the gun's condition was. Plus if things really hit the fan you could hold the trigger down and pump the action to really put the lead out...

Classic shotguns.
