Big .50 makes meat

Post by YoungAndDumb »

Here's a look at the little 3-point whitetail I got with the Sharps this year. First time hunting with the .50-cal and black powder, and it was fun. Shot him at 45 yards, quartering a little bit towards me as he chased a doe, and got both lungs. Bullet made a nice 1/2" hole going in and out, and he ran about 50 yards before falling over dead. Not a huge buck by any means, but still a trophy. :D

Shiloh #1 Sporter .50 2.5" w/ 30" 14lb bull barrel, Montana Bullet Works Gov't-style bullet over 110 grains of Goex Express 1F. Thanks to Manny and Kurt for sharing their loads and knowledge, which I put to good use!

YD,

Nothing wrong with that Buck.
He will make good eating.
How did you get along with the heavy barrel?

The heavy barrel was well, heavy, but not too bad. It's not something I'd pack around a whole lot, but it wasn't as tough as I thought it would be. Not too heavy for a walk and then sit kind of hunt. I'm lucky because I'm a big guy, so it doesn't bother me much at all. I really like it, as it tones down the recoil, and just feels right to me, at least for a "buffalo rifle." I got this rifle just for the fun factor, and boy is it fun! :D

Congratualations on a nice buck.

The size of the rack does not matter when you have done it fair chase.

When I watch some of the programs on TV regarding the Whitetail hunts it has become sickening to me. They use cameras, guides, baits and fenced in areas "game farms" to make the big kill. To me it loses all the meaning to what hunting is about. They do it for their ego and the $ and thats just wrong.

Very Nice Job! May this buck be the first of many with your Shiloh.

Take care,

Congrats Y & D. I agree with Dan and Stephen about the trophy thing, especially with bp. Oh yea, I like a heavy hunting rifle too. That's why I'm getting a standard weight half octagon. :)

Dan I'm with you on the tv shows. There are a few good ones but they're mostly a joke. The worst ones are the whitetail shows where they're in a stand of some kind over a bait situation shooting put and take steroid deer which happens to be just about all of the shows. Here in the west the elk shows are mostly for preserve animals too.

The show that I think is one of the best is Eastmans Hunting. DIY hunting mostly on public land but on occasion a guided hunt pops in. I remember going to showings of Gordon Eastmans films at the Civic Center here in Great Falls with my Dad and Uncle when I was in grade school. Gordon would narrate them as they showed on the screen. Cool memorys!!!!

I like Eastman's too. Pretty much feet on the ground stuff.....you know real hunting. If there's a complaint I have it's their big emphasis on the "trophy" thing. Other than that it's good. Those sound like good memories.

Another one that I like is "On Your Own Adventures". No guides and mostly spot and stalk stuff. I've seen their shows where they get screwed up by hunting pressure just like we do.

Pete,

I agree geared to much toward the trophy when in truth anytime you spot stalk and take a Bull or a Buck in their backyard to me thats a trophy. But then again I can understand their doing that it's for show and makes their TV program something others want to watch. To many guys have the mind set if it doesn't score X amount then it's inadequate. Maybe says something about their situation in real life they have to make up for

"On Your Own Adventures" I saw the other evening and he got skunked in Kansas and another state. It was not for lack of trying it just is how it is hunting public land more often than not. All in all it is an enjoyable show I don't mind watching.
