Sad hunting story or lack of....

Post by Gussy »

Ever do something you wished you hadn't???? Well my boat has been sitting out in the weather and it's been drivng me crazy. It was out because my wife wanted to set up a room in the shop for hobbies and we temporarily moved stuff into the normal parking space to work on the room. I did some measuring and the boat would fit in the house garage if I angled it.

I don't have much turn room in front of the garage, my F250 takes weeks to turn, so I would have push it in by hand. Here's where it went south.

My front apron is pitched and there is a 1" lip at the garage. It took a couple of try's, but, I finally made it and when the dolly wheel got to the lip I gave an extra good heave.    Seriouly pulled a calf muscle

TOMORROW is elk season  For the first time EVER, I can't walk and I will have to ride the 4 wheeler to near the hunting area and crawl if needed, up to one of my favorite sitting spots. NO Shiloh this year :( :( I'll take the lightest thing I own, a 600 Rem carbine in 6mm. As long as I'm not moving, no pain.

I told my hunting partner I would not be much help should one of us get one!!

Gussy that sure sounds like a good excuse for getting out of work
Sorry to hear about your pain, it does put a damper on a good hunt.

Just remember, ibuprofen is your friend.

Good luck,

PS. Take the Sharps anyway. It will make you feel better and it makes a better crutch in a pinch...

Gussy,

Did you wrap the calf in ice? If you alternate between ice and heat the next day you should see some improvement. You also could take and rub the area with ben gay or similer and wrap. The muscle will loosen up some and along with Ibprofen.

Kelly,
Yes, iced right away for 3 hrs. Haven't put any heat to it directly. I've stayed off as much as possible. Also, yes to the little brown pills!! Today, it seems better once it's warmed up. Pretty stiff this morning.

Tomorrow, I WILL go elk hunting, even if it hurts    No way I'm staying in the house. Did I mention I saw 50 elk go into the canyon above my house last weekend???? :P 2 big bulls, a couple smaller ones and several spikes (I can only shoot spikes). I'm sure they've moved on by now, but they just might return. My canyon is only a passing lunch room to them.

Check with your local physical therapist. See if they have a tube of biofreeze they'll sell you. Great stuff for loosening up strained/sore muscles.

You might also try a pair of Under Armor socks under your regular boot socks. They are acrylic, come up just below your knee and provide a lot of support in the lower leg to help keep circulation moving good. They do a good job of minimizing the deep rings in the lower leg one sometimes gets at boot tops or the tops of tighter fitting boot socks. I wear these and then my regular boot socks over them all the time, and wouldn't be w/o them.

Hope you get your elk. :D

No elk, no shooting in the area. I came back in to get some lunch. It's cold and a light rain which is supposed to get heavier later and as cold as it was, maybe snow too.

The good news was my leg felt much better today once I was up and moving. :D My hunting partner went ahead of me on foot and let me know it was OK to drive up to a landing where I could watch a wide area. Nearly the whole time I was there I walked to keep my leg warm and loose. I tested it a bit on a hill. Didn't like up hill but down was OK. I could walk with no pain on the flat if I didn't push it and kept a slight bend in the knee.

Thata boy, get out there despite the severe injury. I used to get really bad ankle sprains playing soccer. Cast? - hell no. I'd just start walking on it. Pain, yes! Worked for me. I'm old now and ankles seem strong and no sprain for many years!
