Bison skull and moose

Post by madisonvalleywapiti »

Found this bison skull while scouting for moose this summer. Last month I tagged my moose. I put a Shiloh on order this summer (to go with the skull!) and its going to have an engraved bison skull on the hammer side and a moose/moose skull on the other.

That is a mighty fine moose and 03A1, good work.

Mighty nice bull there. Where were you at? (you can at least tell us what state, though I am prepared to accept UTMs, Lat-Long or any kind of hand drawn map of most direct route to the kill site!)

I think a look at his cap and handle will give you a little clue!!

The critter in the background is my silver lab pup Samson.
Image No real secret on the moose area, its probally the most heavily applied for spot in Montana. Shot him between Bull cr. and Cow cr. on the Ruby river. The bison lived in that same country many, many years ago im sure.

Nice that you got the skull propely taken care of. I found one washed out of the ditch bank one spring, took it home and put it by the steps. bumped it a couple days later and it disintegrated into a thousand little pieces. (well maybe not quite that many) !!

Skull may be several hundred years old. I was on a Wyoming dig once at an Indian cliff kill site and the skulls looked exactly like that. Great find! Take good care of it.
I had gotten possession of a big "50" gun early in the fight, and was making considerable noise with it.

Nice moose and skull find. Moose sure have shiny coats, looks like a nice slick horse.
The skull find is too cool. One of those things that happens when you least expect it I suppose.

Moose are as big as a Clydesdale! Ive found bison bones before and always try to keep an eye out for them hoping to find a skull. After finding some vertebrae that weathered out of the creek bank i started digging on a hunch and was very surprised that I actually found a skull! :D

I have heard of thinned glue as a stabilizer too. But these days, there is probably something better. A quick surf of the web may find you a Dept. of Anthropology or Archeology at, say, Montana State U. And if you find the right faculty person give him or her a call (not a damn email!). See if you can get 5 minutes of instruction.
