Mountain music with some excitment

Was out feeding my cows earlier this evening and the wolves were howling up a storm. They were over on the hill across from our place. Their howles really carried through the cold clear air. We have not been bother by them since early fall, before hunting season. They had started killing some of the local stock at that time. They have also really hurt the deer and elk heards here. Wish they were some place else. Just venting a little. Thanks

No offense intended but I suppose the irony is that the wolves........and the deer and elk for that matter probably wish people were someplace else.

While on an elk hunt to the west, I noticed a radio-collar hanging on a county-road fence. The person I was riding with said that he sees them, sometimes, more than one collar, on a fence. Wolves and other predator-types have those collars attached by F&G and other agencys, I've been told. I also understand that stockmen don't care to have those critters hanging around their livestock.

In hunting country, I've never seen any animal with a collar.

:D Best news to come along in quite some time is the federal judge in Cheyenne that ordered the FWS to knock off the bs and do like they agreed to do when they wanted to bring those Canadian wolves into Wyoming.
That means that the GYA area wolves will have dual status, protected in some places, trophy game in others, and like state law has said since there was state law, they're predators in the rest of the state.

That's good to hear Don
I know a lot of people were pretty mad at that Judge in Missoula for shutting down the hunting. But I had a feeling maybe it would help Wyoming win their battle. I just wish Montana and Idaho had the Balls Wyoming does.

It's funny how many so called sportsmen thought Wyoming to be the bad guy here. I even got into quite a discussion on anothr forum with one of the head twits from the Montana Wildlife Federation (Ben Lamb) he was just plumb sure us dummies here in Wyoming were the root of all evil...
Anyway it's been quite awhile now and the USFWS have not appealed, or at least I haven't seen any press releases on it.
Maybe you can start adding to your crop dusting business with aerial gunning wolves? Change the spray nozzles for some 30 cal miniguns?

The frickin 'tree huggers' couldn't care less about whether or not the wolves killed every elk/deer in the northwest!

It's gonna be up to the local populace....meaning the ranchers as to whether or not the wolves take $$$$$ out of their pockets!

Damn wolves were shot out and poisoned many years ago...for a reason and that reason shouldn't be too difficult to figure out! Same way down here with the Black Bear.....which is a problem already!!

Don,

Actually, a good 26" barreled sidexside single trigger 12 ga. and #4 buckshot works really well for that type of aerial work; lead BB shot is good, too. Don't want to use steel shot in this job; it will ricochet off hard or frozen ground, and put holes in the bottom sides wings, fuselage and fuel tanks. That's not good for achieving a harmonius outcome. I s'pose ya wanna know how I know this, huh?

Regards

Mulhern,

I'm sure you would be very good at this job. Most of the better pilots for this kind of work were old spray pilots that know how to crank a plane around w/o driving it into the ground. :D High wing aircraft are used (J3, Super Cub, Citabria, et al.) in this job, and there is stuff to learn just about like anything else. Old spray pilots figure this game out really fast. 8) The best system was to have the pilot figure out what worked well for him and the gunner then adapt to the style that works well for the pilot; not vice versa.

I'm outta the biz now, but it was sure a nice way to get study animals for the work I was doing at the time.

Regards

I was doing this in the late '60s matter of fact! On occasion here in North Louisiana we get snow....and I had a J-3 Cub with 100 HP engine and as you know dual control...tandem seated. The side panel....we took off which opened up the lower right side a good bit! I made a 'stop' so whomever was shooting from the rear seat wouldn't swing the muzzle too far forward and shoot the wing support strut in half!! Used both a Rem M11 and sometimes an old 1897 pump gun that was as smooth as glass! I used 00 buck shot which worked well! We had lots of coy dogs then as they were just moving into our area from East Texas and boy....did we roll those suckers when it snowed! Even with no snow....there were/are lots of open fields down here....LARGE FIELDS/AREAS where rice was grown and in early morning and late evening we'd catch them moving and roll their arses!!

Not my video but this is what it looked akin to. These guys seemed to be flying a little too high. I got lower.
