Oregon Bill the longbow is kind of a beast to master. I use to be really good to 40 yards but with work and family taking up most of my time I haven't had the time to shoot as much as I would like too. If you do happen to get one I would go with a lite draw weight the longbow seems to be less forgiving then the recurve.

Those are both real nice. Most anybody would be happy with those two. That 15 inch antelope especially with prongs like those is something that doesn't come around everyday and the elk....well what can you say. Looks like you had a real good time. Those .270 Sharps are pretty efficient antelope killers aren't they? The 200 yd. coyote is real impressive, how come no photo?

Pete we didn't have a camera and I wasn't going to walk back to the truck a mile and get it. Trust me I was sick I didn't bring one. I killed a 15 inch buck with a 44 40 73 winchester about 6 years ago. We compared the pictures of the one my buddy dusted the other day and the one I killed and I'm thinking it will go 16 or better. We didn't have a tape measure when he killed it I was guessing on it's measurements. He will pick it up tomorrow from the meat locker and I will let you know what it measures. The bull will make Pope and Young for sure.

An antelope especially a 15 incher with a 44-40, now that's different. Yea let us know what he measures. A 14 incher around here is good as it's not known as the big buck area. There are bigger ones but they're not common at all.

Good work Stephen.
There is nothing more rewarding then to take game with a long bow.
Just dont draw it to fast when it's -22 :) I had a nice lemon wood bow snap on me.

When I was 10 years old in 1950...the one and only Howard Hill came to my hometown and put on a demo at our local theater and I've been a longbow man since that day! No elk....but I've gotten quite a few whitetails! :D

Ya Pete I bought the 73 Uberti from Orville I think he and my dad ordered them at the same time. They both have the 30 inch barrels. I shot that little rifle all summer before I took it hunting and was proficient to 150 yards. I ended up belly crawling in the mud to 174 yards and ran out of cover so I gave her a little more sight. I ended up nailing him in the spine above the shoulder blades a second shot threw his heart and he was meat on the table.

Thanks Kurt

I would be sick if this bow busted. I have three of this make of bow and he is no longer in business.

Rick longbows and blackpowder guns just seem to go together.

Stephen;
He's a damn nice buck. Too bad your friend wasn't using a bp rifle though huh :) ? As you showed with your elk, shooting a big one isn't and shouldn't be the determining factor on whether your trips are fun and/or successful but once in awhile it is cool. I think getting a coyote with your 50 and a cow elk with your long bow are accomplishments bigger than a lot of more so called prestigious scenerios. I start next weekend. It's been real droughty in south eastern Colorado so we'll see.

Ya Pete you said it perfectly. I just want a great hunt with a clean kill in the end no matter what size or sex of the animal. I tried to shame my hunting partner into using the Sharps but it didn't work he is use to it by now. :lol: Oh well he will grow up and be a real man some day. I wouldn't even let his bolt action guns get within two feet of my Sharps rifle. I'm hard on him. :lol: He does give me a ration as well. I'm looking forward to taking my seven and five year olds out hunting yet they can hardly wait. Good luck to you Pete.
