Don, thanks for posting the picture.

I had the opportunity for an elk earlier this year and decided to use my new Business Rifle in 45-70. The shot was a lasered 80 yards in timber and some fairly thick brush. I was propped on the side of a tree, and finally figured out a hole I could get a bullet through, and took the shot. The 507 grain round nosed paper patched bullet at 30-1 caught him in the lungs and went on through. He went less than 30 yards after the shot.

The load was the 507 grain round nosed paper patched 30-1 bullet pushed by 70 grains of KIK 3f over a CCI BR2 primer. This is a very accurate, clean burning load in this rifle, and sometimes I wonder why I shoot anything else. Shoot straight, rdnck.

More like has some character ON his horns. Holding on to them.

Looks like dinner is assured. Nice job. I need to make elk steaks again.

Very nice elk. Hope the guy that got it gets fed. Looks pretty skinny and famished from chasing that elk, I guess. And, where do you shoot elk where there's so many big oak leaves? There once were elk in Oklahoma but that time is done gone.

Judging by the bloodletting he did from his nose, the lung damage was catastrophic!

Nice bull, nice rifle, and a good day afield! It don't get much better!

Rdnck, congrats on a fine elk. I hope to get one with my Sharps one day.
BB, Oklahoma has alot of elk. Tbe only way they can be hunted is by controlled hunt(lottery). If your lucky enough to be drawn its a once in a lifetime chance. I've been applying for 20 years. No luck yet. Its likely the only way I'll ever get to hunt elk.
Again, congratulations and thanks for all the hunting stories and loading info.

Well, they say that "no job is complete until the paperwork is done" and this shows paper patched bullets work and really get the job done!

Congratulations!
I had gotten possession of a big "50" gun early in the fight, and was making considerable noise with it.

Elk in OK - yep, I looked it up. They even have a season which surprised me. I was just wondering and guessing the place because of the oak leaves. Could be Missouri for all I know. Oh, yeah, the last native elk in OK was shot in 1908 or so and was a Merriam elk. Have to look why that name as there are Merriam turkey some places. Also, there are some pretty nice game ranches in OK on the web. Kinda costly but another way to go. Search them to see pictures of elk.

Bill, I have read Elk were rather common even East of the Mississippi in colonial times. They used to be a plains animal in the Lewis and Clark era. I also remember reading , how ever accurate the information I can't say , that there were some buffalo East of the Mississippi as well.
And a tid-bit that really surprised me was that buffalo were indigenous to Alaska as well at one time. The ones we have now were transplants from Canada.
Elk have been also transplanted on Afognak Island and are doing well. I think this would be a fun hunt to make. I have two friends that go every year and they always get elk because they know where they hang out. MD
