Business rifle DRT's another whitetail

Post by Darryl »

Its hard to compete with Kipp's pictures, but here is a buck I took this morning with my 45/70 business rifle. 85 yards, slight quartering shot behind the ribs on left side, dropped in its tracks. 525 grain 30/1 flat-nose with 70.0 grains of 2F Express.

Any picture with a sharps in it is a good picture. I soon will be able to be as fortunate. Congrats on a nice buck!

Thanks Kipp.
Once you drop the hammer on a game animal with a Sharps, you won't go back to bolt guns.

Those pictures of yours are nice. Our country down here is nothing like that - but we're also not as cold!

Post pics of your new rifle when you get it (with or without a trophy kill).

Best regards and good luck for the rest of the season,

Way to go, Darryl. That is a nice buck with the Business Rifle. Those 525 grain bullets don't take no for an answer. Shoot straight, rdnck.

Darryl,

That is a nice buck! Good work.
Those flat nose bullets shot with the .45-70 are like Thor's Hammer.
What is the mould they are cast in?

Thanks Bill. They do speak with authority - But I think I still need to get a Lyman government mould like we discussed. Again, this flatnose veered upward and exited the base of the neck just like it did on the buck I killed last year (it did not penetrate straight). Its the weirdest darn thing. This time - I know the bucks head was up before the shot. It was only slightly quartering away at the break of the shot. The bullet entered the ribs where I wanted it to on the left side (I was wanting it to enter the left side right about were the diaphram connects to the ribs, cutting through the back portion of the left lung and crossing through roughly the back & middle portion of the right lung and exit). The deer dropped instantly just like the one I killed last year. It did the exact same thing the buck I shot last year did too- it wiggled its tail and slightly kicked its legs for about 3 seconds then it went totally limp. It didn't move a bit after that. The shot was 85 yards and I could see everything as the grass was low.

When I went up to it and flipped it over - there was no apparent exit wound on the other side of the thorax. I couldn't believe it. I thought there is no way that 525 grain bullet stopped inside that deer. But we had this same discussion last year, and Brent even described his experience with a small deer that stopped a slug of his, so I figured it was possible.

But the bullet did in fact exit. I didn't discover the exit wound until I was hoisting it up to skin and quarter. It exited the base of the neck on the right side and the hole was about the same size as an entrance hole (not bigger), and there was no blood coming out of the hole in the base of the neck.

But when I gutted the deer, the entire thorax was filled with blood. That deer internally bled like I haven't seen before.

I know we all talked about same weird performance of my bullet last year, and recall that Bill also had a flatnose veer upward and break the neck on his Zebra in Africa.
That's something to think about regarding flatnoses. Obviously this is not enough evidence to omit them from consideration and I don't want to start a huge debate here. But - I'm about to get my hands on a government round nose mould and try it.

Kurt - the mould was cut by Brooks, but it was by my own design. I deliberately designed a longer bullet with extra room and groove area to carry plenty of lube down my 34" Hartford. But I think that's the problem. It's long - 1.310" with a .310" meplat. It shoots great, but I'm thinking this design is affecting my straightline penetration. It's seems to be veering of course and I think its the the length and Meplat that could be the problem.

Hey Darryl, I was bear hunting (again) the end of September and this big boy came along. Shiloh military rifle in 50/70 using your design 525 gr flatnose cast in 40:1. 1 shot = 1 bear dropped on the spot! I was impressed. The best part was getting 6 of us to tie this bruin on a long pole and carry him out through the thick Maine woods just like you see deer hunters do in old photos. I didn't want to drag that beautiful pelt on the ground. We broke the first pole and went to a 4" maple the second time and did get him out whole. 380 lbs on the scale - fat as could be. Thanks for help with the bullet design, Peter Image

Nice Bear Pete.
I'm not trying to break my arm patting myself on the back here - but that .50 caliber bullet that I designed has been a real winner for me as well. Its extremely accurate out of my 28" - 1/26 twist roller. It has an overall length of 1.050" a meplat of .350", and 3 grease grooves that are .080" wide which adequately carry the lube. On that particular bullet - I always have gotten straightline penetration on Hogs and Deer.

I drew up the .50 caliber bullet back in October or November 2008 and had Brooks cut me a mould. It worked so darn well that I tried to make a relative bullet for my .45 by adjusting the dimensions as necessary for caliber and adding one groove so I could carry more lube in my 34" barrel. It shoots good, and carries a nice lube star out the end of my 34" barrel as I had hoped for. But - its results in the field have not been as satisfactory as I had hoped. I think the problem with my .45 bullet is that the Meplat combined with the overall length. There are defintely differences in how bullets perform. My .50 cal works great - my .45.....no.
