Thanks for sharing the family stuff Stephen! Bobw took the words right out of my mouth. You have a wonderful time with that new rifle and many happy family memories it will give. 27 shots it a row! That's fantastic.

Take care.

Mike

Stephen.

This is a very good write up you have going here with your Family.

If it was legal to use a cartridge rifle to hunt deer here in Illinois this would be my #1 choice for the caliber to use.
This is my idea for an ideal heavy timber rifle we have where I hunt deer here and up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I like the crescent butplate with a light weight 26 or 28" barrel. I like the crescent butplate because it stays put when your dressed for the cold and with the light powder load the little .40-50 has the 26" barrel is plenty long enough to consume the powder.
That is a great rifle and caliber for your Family.

Thanks Kurt, next year my oldest boy will be able to make meat with it, I will take one animal with it this fall and hopefully my wife as well. I am curious how my bullet will do on deer and antelope. As long as I put it in the vitals their should be meat on the table, 40 style! Glad you all are enjoying this thread, it's been fun to share the journey.

Thanks

Stephen & bobw,
Many thanks, for the responses. I have much enjoyed the info in this post. I am trying to plan out a rifle for my wife and grand daughter, and have been thinking on this caliber for a while. It's now on the top of the list, thanks.

Thanks Sarge, but the credit alone goes to Stephen, He is giving me the itch same as powderburner has, total joy to shoot, low recoil, inexpensive to feed with an unlimited brass supply available. Normally less you go thru Goodman and change the order to your needs it takes almost 2 years to order and get a gun. A guy could save some cash up and wait for the next rd/bull barrel run, put down the deposit on a new Business rifle in 40-50 SBN and have it in fairly short order after they start the rd /bull run. One ought to call Shiloh and politely inquire about the status of the next rd/bull barrel run. :) Just might get a guy into a gun in shorter than normal order. bobw

Stephen, or anyone, what's your opinion on this cartridge as a target competition round?

I have shot mine in at least 3 gong matches and the Quigley with the 285 gn bullet and 50 gns of powder and have had no problems hitting when I do my part. my eyesight is the limiting factor for me as it is real bad.
dont know yet if it will knock over rams with the load I use , but I am working at finding out,

Prolly not pete they would not be able to be chambered in one of Stephens guns nor would he pollute the bore with one if he could. bobw

Oh they'd chamber fine bob if they were the correct size in relation to the chamber just like the original grooved bullets were.
