OK, the barrel sights do work
45-90, gov bullet at about 110 yards. Heart shot and he was on the ground in less than 20 seconds. At the shot he jumped, ran, circled around and back into the herd and fell over.

That is the way it is supposed to work, know you rifle, shoot it enough get the confidence with and the distance can be increased. Good job.

Didn't have a metal detector along Complete pass through and might still be going?? Actually I didn't mark the spot of the shot well and did not even look in the dirt for a landing spot. Pretty tough to do in that grass. I was concentrating on the animal and if I'd need another shot.
We did a couple sneaks to get up on the animals. They were moving all the time and just when a shooter looked like he'd clear the herd, he'd either step behind another or another would move in front or back of him. We were trying to watch 2-3 animals for a clear shot, didn't want any 2'fers. I knew this bullet and load would shoot all the way through. After a bunch of shuffling, the dumb one in the herd stepped out in the clear to get his photo taken. That's him in the photos.
45-90, 90 grns 1 1/2 F Old E, gov bullet 25-1, Shiloh #1 sporter with std weight half round barrel, barrel sights. Shot off long sticks, standing position. I actually had the triggers set 3 times and then unset them before I actually had a shot.

There you go, Gussy. Good job, and congratulations. That's the way it works when you have the right set up and put the bullet in the right place. Plenty of good eats there. Shoot straight, rdnck.

Nice going and thanks for the right up and pictures. To bad you couldn't recover the bullet, that would have been a nice trophy by itself! Looks like a blue bird day to hunt too.

No way to know for sure, but the exit hole was twice as big as the entrance. It had to hit some bone, light bone, ribs.Dan O wrote:I see you used 25-1 did it expand at all??

I knew they were in the area and have been in the past. I've found tracks, but this is the first positive ID on My property.

Yes Kurt, it's stretched in the shop now and pretty dry. I still ned to wash the fur and do some final oiling and softening. The skull is pretty clean too. I want to put it out for a sun bleach. Trying to figure out where to put it so some varmint doesn't get at it.Kurt wrote:Good work Jim!!

Rib steaks on the grill. Man, that's as good as it gets. I think I was eating a steak a week for a year when I shot mine at Ricks. Did you get a few pheasants also?
