2014 Texas State Black Powder Cartridge
Rifle Silhouette Championship Match

By TSRA Director Kenny Tebbe

The Heart of Texas Silhouette Association hosted the 19th annual Texas State Black Powder Cartridge Rifle Silhouette Championship and competitors witnessed some very challenging weather conditions and some superb shooting. This year’s match saw competitors from 10 states converge on Central Texas for fine weather, spirited competition, and cherished fellowship.

The scoped rifle match saw a near record number of competitors as 36 shooters came to test their skills against a very finicky head wind, switching mirage, sunny skies, and some of the most challenging shooting the Windy Hill Shooting Complex has ever witnessed! This year we once again held a 60 shot match to determine the State Champion and ultimately it was Ken Wienken who captured the title after holding off a strong finish by 2nd place winner Matt Harris. Matt finished his match by shooting 6 of the 10 off hand chicken targets but fell short of taking over the lead by 1 point; and rounding out the top three was Mississippian David Barfield with a score of 44/60. David Barnes earned High Master with a 44/60; Rex “Andy” Clinton earned High AAA honors with a 41/60, while South Texan Darron Ross won High AA with a 36/60. Rounding out the classes was Arthur McMeans winning High A class with a 27/60 and Max Bell winning High B class with a 21/60. This match was a great success and all the competitors wholeheartedly voted to have this format again next year. The scope match was a great start to our three-day weekend competition and, unknowingly, set the stage for more fine shooting and facing new challenges.

Ken Wienken, 1st, and Matt Harris 2nd

The open sight match started on Saturday to deceptively nice, but cool, weather that proved to be extremely challenging to shoot in as two weather fronts were working their way through Texas. A heavy head wing from the south/southwest made the long-range targets at 385 and 500 meters a little maddening, and very challenging to read the ever changing conditions. Ultimately, Ken Wienken was able to shoot through the tough conditions and pull out a win with a 30/40 for the day but his spotter Ed Story deserves a hearty handshake for a solid performance in calling conditions. In silhouette, a good spotter is worth their weight in gunpowder. David Barnes listened to his spotter and was rewarded by topping the Master class with a 30/40, while Dr. Ralph Cole won AAA class with a 29/40, and smiling Larry Cohen muscled his way to the top of the AA class with a 25/40. Relatively new shooter, Russell Miller, stormed to the front of the A class with a 23/40 and David Roelle, secured B class with a solid 20/40. With the competition over everyone gathered around for a wonderful BBQ supper, catered by Sam’s of Fairfield, the famous drawing for some wonderful prizes and enjoying some great fellowship.

The Shiloh Rifle Company of Big Timber, MT once again graciously donated a Sharps 1874 rifle gift certificate which was won by North Carolinian John Bell who surprised everyone by giving this wonderful gift to his shooting partner of 25 year; Bill Davis. Bill was all smiles and very humble with such a generous gift. Visiting shooter Jack Hawkins was elated to win a handcrafted oak wood range cleaning box skillfully crafted by Brad Swenson and coveted by many. A beautiful walnut ammo line box, built and donated by Mr. Richard Wood, was won by Pat Armentrout to round out the evenings raffle prizes. We all witnessed a beautiful sunset over the range while sharing stories to cap off the evening.

Sunday, day two of the iron sight competition, started beautiful, cool, mostly calm but extremely deceiving. It did not last for when relay one was called to the firing line, the head wind returned and gusted upwards of 25 mph. By the middle of the match, even the best shooters were growing frustrated as the mirage and wind never agreed and ran opposite of each other, or so it seemed. At the end of the day TSRA Director and match director, Kenny Tebbe turned in a 29/40 to win the daily match. Randy Dearman dominated AAA class with a 27 while Hollis Driskell turning in a 22 to take AA class. Darron Ross secured the A class with a 19 and Dave Roelle anchored the B class with a 19.

The State Championship is determined by an aggregate of both match 1 & 2’s scores and this year it ended with a tie between Kenny Tebbe and Ken Wienken, so a 5 chicken shoot-off was used to determine the winner. It was Kenny Tebbe who came out on top by hitting 2 of the 5 chickens and with an aggregate total of 57/80 he was crowned State Champion. Mr. Ken Wienken captured 2nd place with a 57/80 and Wade Loudamy of AAA class pulled off his first trip to the winners circle by earning the 3rd overall place with a 55/60.

Rounding out the winners circle was Oklahoman Jay Lee winning High Master with a 54/80, while Mike Hrubetz put in a solid performance and won High AAA honors with a 50/80. Mr. Hollis Driskell was crowned High AA winner with a 47/80, while Russell Miller claimed the title of High A with a 39/80. Dave Roelle came out on top winning High B honors with an impressive 39/80 score and with scores like that won’t be staying in B class for long. Janet Dunbar secured the title of High Woman with a 28/80 and is one of our newest competitors in BPCR Silhouette.

The state match would not have been such a success without the kind and generous donations of our sponsors, notedly: Shiloh Rifle Company, Montana Vintage Arms, Steve Brooks Moulds, Schuetzen Powder, SPG Lube, Starline Brass, Cistern Publishing, CPA rifles, Creedmoor Sports, Dixie Gun Works, Midway USA, DZ Arms, John Walters Wads, Cats Shooting Sticks, Redding Reloading, MidwayUSA, Keith’s Ace Hardware of Hewitt, C. Sharps Arms Co., Kreiger Barrels, Shilen Rifle Inc., Birchwood Laboratories, Brownells Inc., Buffalo Arms, Mr. Brad Swenson, Mr. Kermit Hoke, Mr. Steve Baldwin, & Treebone Carving. It is the selfless giving of others that makes a match a BIG SUCCESS!

Personally, I would like to thank my wife, Nancy, as well as all the competitors and friends who made this championship match a success. Countless hours go into preparing a range, repairing targets, and grooming the grounds getting ready for a big match. David Barnes deserves a big pat on the back for all his hard work as members like this make being the TSRA BPCR Match Director a rewarding position.
