Ten (10) of your fellow competitors showed up on this bright, sunny day to contest our 1st mid-range match of the season. More breeze than had been forecast so we started off quite cool (38F - was 10F better than last season's opener). The bright sun soon cleared the trees that line the east side of the range and had us feeling warmer. The wind maintained a twitchy 5-10mph with plenty of mirage.
Congratulations to Vince D'Alessandro, who humbled all of us prone shooters with his fine 264-5X (all his X's were at 600yd, as well) position result and match win. And, welcome to Doug & Kathy Chapman, two new shooters who did well in shooting their first match at distances longer than their 200yd home range. Thanks to everyone for helping set up & take down the range. A special thanks to Josh, who ran the pits and ran at least two targets for most of the match and did a masterful job.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at our next match, which is Saturday, May 6 (the day before Mother's Day).

Below are the results of our 2015 Eastern Regional & NJ State Championship BPTR Mid-range 60-shot match.
Congratulations to John Bly for the prone win and Paolo Amedeo for the position win. Things were very tight at the top, with 1pt separating 1st & 2nd prone and only 6 between 1st & 2nd position. Great shooting. This was John's first regional win and a repeat for Paolo. Congratulations also to the 2nd & 3rd prone winners, John Haagen (last year's MW) and Ernie Bennett, and 2nd & 3rd position winners, Vince D'Alessandro and Lynn Curruthers. In addition, congratulations to Ernie Bennett and Vince D'Alessandro for their NJ State Championship wins in prone & position. Both are repeating from last year.
We had some tough conditions to shoot in. The match started under partly cloudy skies and mild breezes. However, by the time we had moved to the 300yd line the skies were mostly sunny and the wind had not only picked up to a gusty 10-15mph, but the temperature & humidity started climbing, as well. The gusty wind made calls at 300yd tricky and this was reflected in the scores.
The 90F+ temps and gusty winds continued at the 600yd line. But, at least we were out of the sun. On one particular shot when I was spotting the three shooters in front of me all shot at essentially the same time. A gust came just as they shot and the result was they went from an X, 10 & 9 on the previous shot to a 7, 6 & a miss.
Once the match was a wrap we gathered at the picnic benches for a hoagie and drink and the prize drawing. Among the prizes were gift certificates from:
Krieger Barrels, Green Mountain Barrels, Brooks Molds, MVA, Starline Brass, Redding and SPG Lube, as well as powder from Schuetzen Powder, lines blocks from Woody's Boxes, a bore sighter from Graf & Sons, a Lee reloading manual. In addition, Hoke Sights donated $100 which was used to augment the winners' prize pool. Our thanks to all for supporting our match and our sport.
I would also like to thank everyone for helping set-up and take-down all parts and pieces needed for a BPTR match. In particular I would like to thank Art Snellbaker for calling the line for us and Josh Romanik for running the pits. They and everyone who pulled targets did a great job on a hot & humid day.

Nice day at the range. Thankfully, the 90F temps & matching humidity was gone. Started off a bit humid, but dried up as the day progressed. A bit of a breeze and broken clouds, but most of the clouds left as we moved further back and the wind picked up, as did the mirage. Between the wind & mirage, scores at 600yd were off a bit.
Congrats to the two match winners, Paolo Amadeo in Position and Ernie Bennett in Prone. Good shooting.
After a break for lunch we returned to the 200yd line and shot a .22LR rifle match. The match consisted of 10min of unlimited sighters followed by 30 shots for record (15 on each of two German 25-ring targets). The mirage was tough and made spotting bullet holes on the black targets almost impossible. About halfway through the mirage lifted and seeing improved significantly for those of us shooting the red targets but remained "difficult" (to say the least) for those shooting on the black targets.
John Haagen prevailed with the scope and Josh Romanik with open sights (very nice considering it was Josh's first match - those young eyes & steely nerves). Congrats to both.
Our next BPTR 600yd mid-range match is Sunday, Oct 9.

Terrific weather for our final match of the season. ~40F to start with, but bright sun and zero wind so we were as happy as a bunch of black vultures sunning ourselves on the 200yd line. Not a cloud in the ski and no breeze to speak of until we were ready to head to the 600yd line (where there is always a breeze and lots of mirage - its Cumberland, after all). Talk about close competition. Eight (8) competitors, seven (7) in iron-sight prone and the top three all had the same 279 score and positions were decided by X-count. Congrats to Ernie Bennett, who out-X'd Carl Leisinger (welcome back with the new knee, Carl) and Vince D'Alessandro. Adam Robrecht was on his way to a good score when he had the misfortune to suffer a scope mount failure.
In the .22LR 200yd match, Glenn Davis prevailed. At this match, unlike the one in Sept, while there was still mirage and a bit of breeze, we could actually see our bullet holes with a decent spotting scope.
So, its a wrap for 2016. Looks like our matches will all be held on Saturday next season, with the first match being the last Saturday in March. This is unofficial at this time and I'll be sending along the 2017 schedule once it has been approved.
