Ridgway 2016

Post by 45bpcr »

Congratulations to Brian Chilson, winner of the BPCR match at Ridgway PA with a score of 31. Dave Heeter took Second Open with a 26, and Greg Lauver placed Third Open with a 25. In Scope, Brian Chilson shot 37 to earn First Scope, followed by Ken White with a 29 and John Haagen with 26. Brian Chilson shot a long run of 12 chickens with a scope, beating his own national record of 11 for Open and setting a new record for Senior. Also of note, Ken was using a 45-70 shooting swaged paper-patched bullets of his own design. Great shooting, guys! Complete results are below.

Turnout was higher than in the past several years, with 29 rifles and 26 shooters. We were extremely pleased to welcome not one but four new shooters - John S., Brian W., Dave P., and Charlie Z. Congratulations on taking the plunge!

It was a beautiful spring day, with cloudy skies giving way to sunshine and temps in the 60s. Winds were calm in the morning and light in the afternoon, leaving mirage as the main challenge.

Our next match is May 29, which is Memorial Day weekend. Hope to see you at Ridgway!

Sincerely,

Craig Duncan

Brian has shot so well, I think he deserves some time off, don't you? Brian, You can just sit back and relax some now.
Maybe until August??? LOL Think of all the lead and powder you would save!

Great shooting, Brian! Looking forward to seeing you again at Raton!

On this Memorial Day weekend, we honor and remember those who gave their lives in defending the freedoms we enjoy to this day.

Brian Chilson is this month's BPCR match winner at Ridgway PA with a score of 32. Greg Lauver took Second Open with a 27, followed by Dan Vivian with a 25. In Scope, Brian Chilson shot 35 to earn First Scope, followed by Kenny White and John Haagen with scores of 29 and 27, respectively. Great shooting, guys! Complete results are below.

We enjoyed a warm spring day, with a mix of clouds and sunshine. There was very little wind and minimal mirage. It was a great day to be out with old friends and new. We had a strong turnout again this month, with 28 competitors shooting a total of 31 rifles, and we were pleased to welcome three new shooters and two juniors.

Putting on a match is a lot of work. Thanks to all the unsung heroes who pitch in and help with painting and setting targets, range work, relay calling, cleaning, emptying garbage, paperwork, etc. We couldn't do it without you.

Our next match is the PA State Championship on June 25-26. You do not need to be a PA resident to compete. Each day is a 60-shot format, so start loading your ammo now!

Sincerely,

Craig Duncan

June 2016 BPCR Match Results

Hello All,

Let me apologize for taking so long to get the results of the PA State Shoot out to everyone. Life got busy for me once we got back to NH.

Congratulations to Brian Chilson on winning the PA State Championship for BPCR Silhouette at Ridgway PA! This was a 2-day match with a 60-shot format, and Brian's aggregate score of 103 set a national Senior record. Please note that these results are provisional depending on confirmation by the NRA. 2nd Open was earned by Bob Bloyer with a 90, and Dave Heeter took 3rd Open with an 83. Complete results are below.

At the end of the 2nd day there were 2 tie scores. In Master Class, John Whitcomb and Dave Heeter had a shoot off on chickens to decide the winner. Dave won the honors!
In the AA Class, John Estok and Larry Kiehl shot turkeys, and shot turkeys and shot more turkeys until 13 or so birds had fallen. Then Larry suddenly put one in the dirt in front of the birds. Did you really miss that shot Larry or were you just tired of shooting? :-)

We had a total of 24 shooters for the 2-day event. We had 2 new shooters, Evan Short and Al Aubin. Hope you guys had a good time!

The weather was in the lower 80s, mostly sunny with occasional clouds and light winds. It sure was better than last year! Mirage was variable, and fairly easy to read. All in all, pleasant shooting conditions.

Due to the 2016 Ohio Valley Regional, we had a lower turnout than normal, and needed only 2 relays per day to complete the match. Our target setter were quick and efficient as always.

Thank you to our match sponsors:
Swiss Powder
Brownell's
Wolfe Publishing
Starline Brass
Roto Metals
SPG Products
Green Mountain Barrels
Brooks Moulds
Circle Fly Wads
Walters Wads
And others for personal donations
Thank you to all the folks who helped us run a successful match - we couldn't do it without your help. In no particular order: John Estok for relay calling, Debbie Chilson for post-match paperwork, Greg and Darlene Lauver, Larry Kiehl and others for target setting/painting. Lester Henry, Rodney Barton and others helped with the post match clean-up.

Our next match is a 40 shot match July 24th. With several regular competitors headed to Raton NM for the Western National match, it's a good opportunity to enjoy a day of play on Saturday and shoot a relaxed club match on Sunday. I plan on wringing out a couple of antique Mil-Surp rifles on Saturday. See you at Ridgway!
Sincerely,

Craig Duncan

And, congrats to John Haagen for his fine 96 in winning scope (44/45 sticks animals on day-1, tying Brian with a 49 for the day), Roger Tremba for 2nd scope and Mark Chronister for 3rd scope. Almost as many scope shooters as open shooters.

Wonder why the NRA doesn't keep national records for super-senior, as it is a recognized shooting group. Am guessing that John's 96 would qualify for a 120-shot match.

Hello Folks,

Due to some combination of luck, skill, and a few of our top competitors being out at Raton, this month's match winner is... yours truly, with a 30. Dave Heeter earned 2nd Open with a 29, and Dan Vivian took 3rd Open with a 27. In Scope, Roger Tremba shot a superb 31, and Mark Chronister earned 2nd Scope with a 29. In other noteworthy accomplishments, we had 2 upclassifications: John Sweka's B-to-AA leapfrog and mine to AAA. Grant Rogers had a ram grand slam - doesn't that just roll off the tongue? Congratulations, guys! It's good to see several new/returning shooters climbing back up the learning curve, and there were some new observers as well. Complete results are below.

It was a beautiful, hot summer day. The morning started cool and calm, with periods of light winds and/or cloud cover as temperatures climbed into the high 80s. Mirage was varied and light to medium. Without our usual Iron Man competitors in attendance, we had just 2 relays. In August we will have 3 relays to accommodate Iron Man shooters and for the anticipated greater attendance in preparation for the Eastern Nationals in September.

Thank you to Craig Artman for relay calling, and to Donna Vivian and Bonnie Artman for help with the post-match paperwork. Thanks to Mark Chronister and Mike Benson for help setting and painting targets with us before the match. Folks may not realize it, but range work is done by us shooters before each match, and we are deeply grateful to anyone who can come early and volunteer their help. Thank you to the Ridgway Rifle Club for their personal support - several people stopped by - and providing such an awesome place to shoot.

For those who have signed up for the Eastern Nationals, information will be forthcoming in the coming weeks.
Sincerely,

Craig Duncan

August 2016 BPCR Match Results

Congratulations to Brian Chilson, winner of the August 2016 BPCR match at Ridgway PA with a score of 31. Dave Heeter earned 2nd Open with a 29, and John Sweka was 3rd Open with a 25. Notably, this is John's first year of shooting BPCR, with his father's new CPA.

In Scope, Brian was also 1st with a 34, followed by 2nd Scope John Haagen with a 32 and 3rd Scope Kenny White with a 28. Take note: Kenny was breech-seating paper-patched bullets. Mark Chronister tied with Kenny but they decided to determine the winner via coin toss. Great shooting, guys! Carolyn Snyder also had a good day, upclassifying to AA and earning a turkey grand slam. Complete results are below.

Conditions were calm and partly cloudy in the morning, giving way to sunshine as temperatures rose into the mid-80s with high humidity, and then clouded over again near the match's end. Mirage and wind were less than we sometimes encounter at Ridgway, but varying from one shot to the next along with the light.

We had a total of 24 competitors shooting 26 rifles, up from 19 and 20 in August 2015. We continue to welcome new and returning shooters, and will find you a spotter if you need one!

You'll notice that the standings below include a 1st AAA Scope and 1st AA Scope. These are new. The NRA does not recognize classifications within BPCR Scope, but for our regular monthly matches we can offer non-official awards, and anyone can sponsor a prize. (The "Most Improved Shooter" prize, sponsored by Carolyn Snyder and including a $25 Midway USA gift certificate, is one such example. John Sweka won it this month.) By recognizing the efforts of both new and long-time shooters, we hope to encourage participation in BPCR shooting. Note that for the Eastern Nationals, only 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Scope place trophies will be awarded. Certificates will be awarded for other Scope classifications.

And on that note, the first Eastern National BPCR match is next month, Sept 22-25. Due to folks finding/making time in their busy schedules to attend this event, we will keep registration open as long as possible, but we need to have a fairly accurate estimate of attendees for squadding and food purchases for the Friday night BBQ. We may be able to accept event-day registrations, but a phone call or email ahead of time would be greatly appreciated. For folks bringing a guest, we want to feed them too, so please let us know. This should be an exciting and fun-filled time for all. Ridgway Rifle Club offers the largest Silhouette range east of the Mississippi. You won't be disappointed!
Sincerely,

What? Perhaps I am not understanding what you are trying to say, but nearly all matches, including NRA sanctioned ones have the scope shooters broken into Master, AAA, AA, A and B.

Craig - not sure where you got your info on this but it is incorrect. Every regional/state match that I shoot (TX, Friendship, MI, KY, GA) and most other matches award the classifications in 'scope'. There were 32 master shooters in scope at Raton and they awarded to 4th place. 50 AAA shooters and awarded to 6th place. 20 AA shooters and they awarded to 4th place. All in scope and just like irons.

See you in 10-days.

October 2016 BPCR Match Results

Congratulations to Dave Heeter, winner of the final BPCR match of 2016 with a score of 31. Upcoming shooter Kevin Burge turned in a 30 to earn 2nd Open, and yours truly Craig Duncan was 3rd with a 27. In Scope, Brian Chilson and Ed Heeter tied at 28, with Brian claiming 1st Scope in a shoot-off by a single chicken. Roger Tremba was 3rd Scope with a 26. We had a total of 18 competitors shooting 20 rifles, which is a good turnout for October. See below for complete results.

It was a strange day for weather. We started with unseasonably warm temps in the morning with cloud cover and light variable winds. Darkening clouds affected visibility by late morning, when some of us were on rams and others on chickens. Then a front blew through. The brief but torrential rain was nature's way of saying that yes, we would take a lunch break after all. In short, the choice of starting on pigs vs. turkeys made a bigger difference than usual, and probably half of us would have traded places with the other half. On the plus side, there was no mirage.

We celebrated several accomplishments. We welcomed new BPCR shooter Shaun Letham, whose 24 earned him a spot in AA. And we had 3 grand slams - Shaun, Gordon Clefton, and John Sweka all knocked down 10 pigs.

Reflecting on the year, attendance at matches was up about 30% compared to 2015. We welcomed five brand new BPCR shooters, along with several more returning after a long absence.

Thank you to everyone who helped us run the matches this year - range work, cleaning, line calling, trash emptying, office work, etc.

Over the winter I'll be working with the club and we'll send out a newsletter once we have match dates for 2017. In the meantime, enjoy the holidays and make lots of ammo so we'll see you at Ridgway next year!
Sincerely,

Craig Duncan
