BPCR Match Results - AP Goodrich Range, Alma, MI

Post by SSShooter »

Wel,l there was no snowman building at this match, we went from carharts and snow to short sleeves
and humidity in one month. The temps on Saturday got up to 91 degrees. At least we didn’t get the
storms that were predicted. But we did get fishtailing headwinds and constant switching mirage out at
the targets. As a front came through that night, the temps and humidity dropped… but not the wind.
Jackets were worn on Sunday as the northerly head winds blew at us all day. A few shooters were able
to figure out conditions. Jim Dietlein shooting irons and Ernie Villegas shooting scope shot well
enough to win the aggregate matches. Congrats to them as well as the daily winners. Thanks to all that
helped at the match and to MJ for bringing goodies. Also we welcomed a new shooter, Bob Johnson
from Indiana. Glad you came and participated.

Our next match is the 3-day Great Lakes Regional, July 8-10. Practice will be on Thursday the 7th.
The picnic will be Saturday after the match. We are planning on holding an official 22 match during
the weekend. In order to participate there is a $15 membership fee, good for the year, into the 22
BPCR Association.
It will be a busy 3-day weekend, come prepared!

Great Lakes Regional BPCR Championship
July 8-9-10, 2016
AP Goodrich Range Alma Michigan
If we had all believed the weather forecast on our phones, I’m not sure how many people would have shown up for the Great Lakes Regional. But luckily we do not trust them and for good reason, we ended up with great weather for the matches. A quick storm blew through Thursday night about 9:00 pm causing some havoc but it was all good after that. We had some tricky headwinds and some annoying 15-30 mph gusts a couple days, but that’s nothing new. And the temps were not as hot as forecast. Being under cover and in the shade all day made life easier. To top it off, with all the dry weather Michigan has had, the state bird (mosquito) was a rare sight!

Congratulations go out to all the medal winners listed above and also to the daily winners. Glenn Fewless started out so-so but came back with a great score on Sunday to clench the Gold in irons John Bly did some good shooting and won the scope Gold from the AA class. Only 3 competitors cleared the pig banks all 3 days. 2 masters, Marshall Chase, Glenn Fewless and a AA shooter, Deb Primeau. That was quite an accomplishment for her, congrats! Also, a big thank you to her for the help in picking up medals for the match as well as getting the delicious pulled pork for our dinner Saturday. She and Sue Johnson (along with Sue’s grand daughter Driana) worked efficiently getting the dinner set up (especially after someone turned up the roaster and almost burned the pork! Oops:) as well as cleaned up afterwards. Thank you to everyone that helped make this match a success. Including those that took time to come Wednesday to help roller paint all the animals and tidy up the clubhouse. The shower looked great thanks to Deb’s scrubbing and 3 bottles of cleaner! Also thanks to all that helped during and after the match with cleanup and anything else that needed done. Thanks also to MJ and Deb for the treats everyone enjoyed during the match. Lastly, a big thank you to everyone that attended!

Re: BPCR Match Results - AP Goodrich Range, Alma, MI

Post by SSShooter »

Every so often we as shooters see things at matches that either inspire us or just leave us shaking or heads. Both happened to me at the last match.

First Glenn Fewless had a firing pin break before the match started. Brad Ryan offered Glenn his spare rifle. I asked Glenn if he would like to take a few shots to get a feel for the rifle before we started the match, an offer he did not accept. Glenn missed one target on his first bank, in between banks I saw him changing the front insert, he never missing anything off the sticks the rest of the match. Glenn used his own ammo in Brads Browning, I would say the Browning rifle deserves its reputation as a fine out of the box rifle. As does Glenn who truly is an excellent shooter.

Next Ernie Villegas has been shooting with us for a few years now, Ernie is a super senior in his early eighties although you would not know that by looking at him. Ernie was match winner on Sunday he shot very well beating some very good shooters to get there. Being in your eighties is an accomplishment on its own, being able to lay down and still shoot off cross sticks at eighty is huge. We all know it takes plenty of stuff to fall in place for us to be able to shoot in our eighties. Ernie I am sure you are an inspiration to many of us, you certainly are to me. Hope you shoot with us for years to come.

Steve Decker

We welcomed a few new shooters; Bob Ess, Don Hugdahl and Jack Phillips. Glad you guys came! The spotter for 2 of these guys was a face not seen in a while. Good to see you in Alma Paul Behe, next time bring a gun! We also got to see MW’s son Matt Chase who was home visiting from Oklahoma where he is stationed with the Air Force and was able to shoot a match with us. Something he hasn’t done since 2008. Saturday evening found us celebrating Matt and his wife Devony’s homecoming with a cookout of hot dogs and hamburgers with lots of other goodies, hosted by MW and Karen Chase.
Our August match started out with some conditions we haven’t had to face in a while. It was raining and on top of that, there was no wind and the smoke was really causing some havoc for the competitors, especially the iron sight shooters. Luckily it didn’t last long and although it was very humid and Sunday’s winds were a little tricky, it was a good weekend. Congrats to the match aggregate winners, Glenn Fewless in iron and Jim Dietlein shooting scope. Jim won shooting scope class which he hasn’t shot in 8 years. Glenn won despite the fact his own gun broke while shooting his first bank of animals and he used a borrowed gun the rest of the weekend that he had never shot or practiced with and used his own bullets. Impressive guys! Congratulations to the daily winners also. Thank you to all those who helped with the match in so many ways. Our last match of the season is September 10-11 and is a registered match.

I shot my second NRA Silhouette match at Alma last week. I just wish I would have found this sooner. Steve runs a very good match and he and his wife Jodi are top to be around with. Great folks as well as all the rest of the shooters.
I had the pleasure spotting for Ernie Villegas for this match as well as the Lodi match. He is fun to shoot with and a very interesting feller to talk with.
Every one at the Alma match are very friendly. I just wish I could put their name with their faces when they come up and say hi Kurt, good to see you again.

Great bunch....Kurt

Kurt,

I couldn't agree more. I attended their match last year and haven't stopped kicking myself for not attending sooner. I have traveled to a lot of matches around the country trying to find the ideal solution to draw more shooters. It boils down to the people you are shooting with. The Alma matches are where you want to start. Great organization and great people. I'm sorry I missed it this year..........FWIW

Jim, as much as I try to avoid Chicago and Gary Indiana traffic, I grid my teeth and drive through it. I have been looking for a different rout. I don't mind going out of the way by a few hours longer and I have done so.
Now that I found a new game I will pester you down your way too. I just might shoot Friendship instead of Lodi over Labor day if things work out.

Kurt,

As others have said and I agree, anytime you can attend a well managed match, you can't go wrong. Friendship is not only a well run match, it is a great place to meet new friends and shoot shoulder to shoulder with some of the best in the country. I hope to meet you at the " Club Championship" on the 3rd and 4th of September...................... 8)

Rumor at the KY match this past weekend is that the line at Friendship has been paved, which is a good thing. It can get pretty "messy".

Again I want to say thank you to all the shooters who help out to make our match's run as well as they do. A special thank you goes out to Dave Gubert Jud Spade Jim and Debbie Primeau and Sam Krawczyk for showing up for Friday morning target set up. It is tough work and these guys deserve credit for the job they do.
