2016 Mile Match at the Wasserburger Ranch

This is where you can place your scores from the matches. It uses an excel spread sheet! If you send me your sheet of scores I can put it on the forum and provide a link where everyone can view it.

Thanks Kurt,I will try. Now that I have an almost ample supply of lead. About 9 bullets to the pound and 117 gr. of 1-f goes rather quickly,if I don't go about my business carefully :D Now to the shoot..... The mile match is definitely a test of eyesight, wind and mirage doping, that we may never fully understand. But we are taught some tidbits to let soak in the old memory banks. I sure hope more of you can take the time to make this match, especially since the format will be changed somewhat to attract more shooters. I'll let Kenny handle that when he's ready to. In order to shoot the mile, like any long range contest, one must really have his proverbial ducks in a row, with a little extra to boot, when it comes to load, bullet, wads, primer etc. My .50 would shoot a vertical of just under two inches at 400 yds,but I have a few things to correct myself with my bench work as well. I had some short impacts and a flier or two that I will work on. I believe I can figure it out. The powder charge to shoot this match must be enough to have proper steam to get downrange accurately that far. Bullet must be to the max for the rifle's twist.(Except for Bryan Y. who makes any bullet work like magic most of the time with his 45-100!) Any little quirk while reloading on the bench will show in spades on or near the target! Spotting is hard, for, at that distance, there are many things to keep up on. No perfect science for sure. I sure hope that the interest in the Tollofson class grows from things like this match. Kenny worked hard to get it a specific class at NRA nationals, and that needs to continue for fear of de-classification. My wife shot the 45-110 Shiloh PP rifle with full house loads and enjoyed it. It is the 25 pounder. My fifty weighs a shade under 20. The recoil is a resounding push, but I find it ok. The twist,or torque is something to keep track of however. I also look at it,when I get even older the less recoil will be a hell of a lot easier to take. Maybe not always with the 50,but it works for now. Thanks again to the Wasserbergers for their time and use of their property.

Randy I don't think Kenny will let me use my Lawrence barrel sights for the mile :D It will shoot past a mile with out a problem and I wont spent the money to buy a MVA just for the mile shoot. :D

Randy I build a Tollofson rifle fours years ago that weighs 25# but I don't like the weight and I don't shoot it. It's a .44-100 Rem chamber with a 35' Krieger barrel, great shooter but I just don't like the weight.

Your right about the mirages over the hot sand. That makes a challenge even at 760 yards less at the 1K. Anyway you made a great come back from the start of that shoot. You must have grid your teeth a little to make up for those goose eggs from the start :D Good work....Kurt

We had winds of nearly 35 mph at times, that made it a tough match, as evidence in the lower scores compared to our last mile... More tail wind conditions that caused some vertical.

Randy's fast twist 50 did quite well with the 700 gr bullet. However on of his bulls eyes and on outer hit were side ways strikes, showing stability issues, he also had 2 shots that where about 30 yards short, which at the time we thought a bad bullet on the first 1, they made no correction, and returned to proper elevation next shot.  he being the only 50 shooter it was easy to see,

Over and under was common with the tail, but often a let off also resulted in a wide miss to the left gusts were to the right. Jerry's PP 45-90 load garnered him a 3rd place, down from 2nd last time. Bryan's 45-100 well it just keeps working.
Bob E did pit duty since his sight extension put him for proper elevation right at the top of his cross piece with GG loads, and on the bottom with PP loads blocking his vision through the Eye Cup. A midrange sight with the extension would of worked.. Something to keep in mind.
