Shippensburg BPCR

As Gunny (Bill Davis) is on his way to the TX State matches, I'll fill in for him with this report for the March match. Friday practice wasn't too bad. Mild winds of 5-6mph with an occasional puff up to 8-9mph. But, mix that in with the 10" of snow on the ground and the full cloud cover and it felt cool to cold. And wet/damp. Those insulated coveralls & boots sure felt nice. But, we were shooting and it was a good time.
Saturday's match weather was about the same. Maybe a few degrees warmer at 44F, or so. But, the wind was negligible. However, there was now the occasional mist or very light fog. Plus, our misses on Friday had turned the snow on the banks behind the animals from the nice white contrast of snow into mud, that pretty much matched the mud on the animals. Sympathy to the iron sights shooters on those animals. The "luck of the draw" also played a big part in scores as some banks of animals were almost impossible to see while others were reasonable. That's the way it goes.
Eleven (11) hardy souls braved the elements to shoot the match. The scope match winner was Brian Chilson with a fine 33. The iron-sights winner was Greg Lauver. To show just how difficult it was go see with irons, Greg's winning score was a 17. Can't hit what you can't see.
Congrats to Brian & Greg. Looking forward to some better conditions (and more than twice the number of competitors) next month.

The weather cooperated this month, not too cold and not too hot. Breezy enough to keep smoke cleared and just enough mirage to keep it interesting. Next month's shoot will be held on 20 May. Hope to have a full line. I would like to thank the line callers, George H. Gil B. and Bob H., as they made the match run smoothly. Also, all those who helped setting up and tearing the range down, your help is really appreciated. The prize table for super shoot is shaping up rather nicely. As of today there are 18 openings left. Congrats to Brian Chilson (scope) for his fine 36 and Amedeo Paolo (irons) for their respective MWs.

Paolo is turning into quite the competitor. He has also tied the national aggregate record for a 30-shot mid-range position BPTR match (his 286-1X missed the record by 2X or 1pt - either would have been a new record).

Hope everyone had a great time at the 2017 Super Shoot. For those who stayed home because the weather report said it was going to rain, you missed a beautiful day at the range. Just remember a weather man/woman can be wrong half the time and still get a pay raise. I would like to thank everyone who helped make this event a success. Chef Karl Seemuller who did a a fantastic job on the pulled pork and Linda who made brownies which I’m told were great (he who hesitates is lost & gets no brownies). Lynn Carruthers provided the rolls, pies and cups. To the set up crew, Bob Kopper, John Bell, Bruce Getgen, Greg Lauver, and Len Kobus a big thanks, you made it happen. To all who helped tear the range down thank you. Deborah Hovatter was our prize coordianator who did a great job, I believe everyone had two passes at the table. Also thanks to the shooters who provided prizes for the table. Please remember to call, email, or send a card of thanks to the fine folks who supported our shoot. Hope to see everyone in July.

I'll add that everyone I've talked to said the 'seeing' was quite difficult, especially later in the day when the 'long animals' were starting to become back-lit. Think that is reflected in the scores.

They were hard to see early in the day also with the fog and haze. Those turkeys were almost impossible to find in the aperture. You just had to get the darkest fuzzy spot centered best you could and hope it was the right one. I shot one out of order. Otherwise I would have beaten Brian Chilson and I haven't done that very many times in the 25 years we've both been shooting at Shippensburg.

Saturday turned out to be a nice day. Hope the weather forecast didn’t keep shooters away. Had 30 competitors who dealt with some weird conditions, Pig scores were lower than normal and alot of folks were given fits on the turkeys. Mirage you can”t see and changing winds had alot to do with it. Thanks to the set up crew Bob Kopper, Bruce Getgen and Len Kobus and all those who pitched in after the match to secure the targets and put the
range back the way we found it. Line callers Jay, Justin and Bob helped make the match happen. Justin was a first time attendee and jumped right in to help, Hope he comes back with his grand dad and becomes a regular competitor, We need the young blood.
Our next match is scheduled for the 19th of August would like to see a full contingent of shooters on the line.

Another great shoot in the books. Only had six empty spots on the line, best attendance this year. I hope we can fill the line up for the last shoot of the
year on the 21st of October. Please thank all the folks who set up the range for the match: Bruce Getgen, Bob Kopper, John Bell And Len Kobus. A big
thank you from me to the line callers this month: Len Kobus, Bob Houghton and Jay Brower. To all who helped tear down after the match, my thanks.
See everyone in October.

The 2017 season has come to an end. We had great weather for the match with the exception of the sun. The targets where hard to see and the turkey and ram numbers show it. Gil Bass has moved up from B to A Class, he attributed it to Bonnie’s great spotting. Greg Lauver hit 10 Rams, and his 10 in a row for the Grand Slam is on its way to the NRA. Still Can’t figure out how he saw them. Jazlyn beat her dad, better tighten up Jesse. Karl Hovatter was overlooked by the match director, he was first in the AAA iron. Your prize will be held till next March, however it will draw no interest.

I would like to thank everyone who made my 70th birthday one of the best I’ve ever had. The apple crisp made by Mrs Clipp was outstanding not to mention the baked goods made by Darlene and Lynn, only gained four pounds.

Pizza for lunch was provided by one of our shooters who wishes to remain anonymous, THANK YOU.

I want to thank everyone who has made my tenure as your match director a great experience. Please give that same support to Tim when he assumes the duties. He will be my understudy for three months or so until he learns the ropes. Tentative date for the first match of 2018 is 17 March. Targets will be painted green to honor St Patrick. Would like to see some of the shooters who seem to have taken the 2017 off come back for the 2018.

Everyone have a safe off season, see you all in March. Will be in contact with everyone when the schedule if firmed up for 2018. If anyone has thoughts on how to improve our matches send them to me.
