Rocky Mountain Regional 22 BPCR

This is where you can place your scores from the matches. It uses an excel spread sheet! If you send me your sheet of scores I can put it on the forum and provide a link where everyone can view it.

Rocky Mountain Regional 22 BPCR

Post by jackrabbit »

Shooters and SmithmoorSupporters,

Despite some significant worry about the weather, the 2019 Rocky Mountain Regional 22 BPCR Championship turned out very well. This is the first year that we have tried holding it over Memorial Weekend in conjunction with our Smithmoor Cup BPCR match. The change in dates resulted in a few less entries, but it turned out to be blessing. The weather predictions were quite poor and it would have been hard to have held it at our west range. Our east range can handle up to 30 competitors and allows us to shoot in almost any weather. With the reduced number of entries we were able to move the match to the east range and shoot in comfort. The weather did not turn out as bad as what was predicted right in Carpenter, but it still would have been wet and cold at the other range. The predictions proved true for the surrounding areas, however, as not far all around us received significant rainfall and hail.
With a few last minute cancellations we ended up with 27 entries. We shot from inside the building, rather than out front on the pad like we sometimes do when it is nice. This past winter season, we implemented a hinged, quick reset target system donated by Dick Hennebry and overhauled by Dad, Gary Smith. There are a few drawbacks, but the positives seem to far outweigh the negatives. We did, however, go back to the regular chickens for this match as we had a hard time making sure the reset chickens were fair. Even with a bunch of adjusting, they would sometimes go down when you hit the rail, and occasionally they would go down when hit and bounce back up leaving one to wonder if they were actually hit or if it just didn't get painted from last time. Plus, as we all know, it is just incredibly satisfying to watch those little suckers go flying when they get hit!
The Rocky Mountain Regional Champion was determined from the aggregate score of the two days of 40 shot silhouette matches. A sidematch held during the regular match and shot in rotation after the chickens and before the pigs was our 5th station paper match. We used a 100 yard Wyoming Schuetzen Union German Ring target from SPG Sales and shot it prone at 100 yards. 14 shots were allowed at the target and the best 10 were counted for score. The idea being that the first four would be sighters and probably not score the best. The big news was RWS Ammunition sponsored this match and donated some serious nice prizes! A full brick of RWS R100 22 match ammo ($185 value) and a very nice RWS hat went to both our high Master/AAA combined class and AA/A combined class. The high overall paper target received a set of the H.M. Pope books by Warren Greatbatch and Tom Rowe and donated by Tom Rowe ($250 value). What an awesome set of prizes! A huge thank you goes out to RWS Ammunition and Tom Rowe! Our aggregate paper target winners were A/AA going to Carl Eliason with a 479 and myself in Master/AAA with a 486. Hugh Wilson was our overall paper target winner taking home the awesome books with a 489! Great shooting Hugh!
When I start thinking about all of the people that have been so encouraging and supportive of my family's efforts in building the ranges and putting on matches, as well as my own personal shooting, I am hesitant to mention names for fear of leaving someone out. There have been so many and I am so thankful for all of the help over these past few years. I do want to express a specific thank you to Jack Odor, however. Jack has been my shooting coach and spotter over the last several years. I don't know if he saw some potential in me or just felt sorry for me, but he walked right up and told me what I needed to do to win very early in my BPCR career. He has been the one to help me find guns to compete with, solve problems during load development, offer suggestions and ideas on how to run and make our matches better, and a million other things while brightening the moment with that sparkle in his eye and that ornery smile. I have seen it a hundred times where he shoots a super score and then settles in behind the scope and does everything thing he can to help me out shoot him. Jack, you are a true Champion and I hope you know how much I appreciate everything you have done for me. When I say I couldn't have done it without you, pard, I mean it.
One of Jack's recent great ideas was he brought up a King target for our match. It was a simple but very nice wooden circle with a ram and Smithmoor written on it. For those that don't know, the rules of a King match are each shooter gets one shot at it. Whoever hits nearest the spot marked on the target wins and everyone autographs the target next to their bullet hole. The winner then receives the target to take home. The kicker is that the winner must then provide the king target for next year's match! Carl Eliason ended up winning the King target and graciously donated it back to the range. It is now proudly hanging inside the shooting shed. Thank you to Jack for the target and the great idea and to Carl for donating it back. I am anxious to see what he comes up with for next year's match!
One of the givens at Smithmoor is the good food. As usual, Momma Lorraine did not disappoint. We had barbecue boneless pork ribs, coleslaw, fresh rolls and brownies for lunch on Sunday and Itialian sloppy joes on garlic toast with broccoli and cauliflower salad while Coralee made rhubard upside down cake and apple crisp for dessert on Monday. Yahoo! Did it ever hit the spot! Thanks a bunch ladies!
One of the other things we have all come to expect at Smithmoor is some super competitive scores. A quick glance at the score board will tell you this match was no different. We ended with ties in AA and AAA class for 1st aggregate and a three way tie for 3rd aggregate in master! As most of you know, I love shoot offs and I was in tall cotton watching! Carl Eliason and John Brooker shot off on turkeys for 1st AA, Jeff Woodring and Hugh Wilson shot off on rams for high AAA, while Kenny Wasserberger, Coralee Smith, and Doc Bement shot off on chickens for 3rd master.
The score board is recreated below and there are lots of pictures on facebook and our webpage (www.smithmoorrange.com), but I want to highlight our main winners here. 4th place received a Buffalo Arms spotting board donated by them, 3rd took home a Wyoming Sight Drifter donated by Steve Anderson of Wyoming Sight Drifter, 2nd received a cool Smithmoor RTIC water jug and the 1st place took home a custom Smithmoor Champion belt buckle. Keith Kelly took home the buckle for A class with a solid 45, while Carl Eliason prevailed in the shoot off for AA class, leaving John Brooker with 2nd place. AAA saw Hugh Wilson and Jeff Woodring both shoot 62's and Jeff Woodring won the shoot off. Jim Rodebaugh shot a 63 to be first master and my Dad, Gary Smith, shot a 61 to be second. Kenny Wasserberger had his game face on and soundly smacked his first chicken to clench the win in the shoot off and end up 3rd, while Doc Bement was second in the shoot off and wound up 4th. With the always solid coaching and spotting from Jack Odor, I was pleased to shoot well and earn the Overall Champion buckle. I am still flying high from the thrill of cleaning the lay downs both days and killing 9 chickens on day two!
A final giant thank you goes out to all that sponsor, support, and shoot our matches. We have the best group of shooters and sponsors that one could have and you guys make putting these matches on so rewarding. Please keep in mind the below business as you shop for supplies throughout the year.

Keep your gun clean and your knife sharp my friends,
Cody Smith
