Great Lakes Regional 2019

Post by John Bly »

The Great Lakes Regional BPCR silhouette match was held this past weekend in central Michigan at the A.P. Goodrich Rifle and Pistol range near Alma MI. It was a 4 day match with a 22 BPCR match on Thursday and 3 days of big bore with 40 shots per day. We had a pulled pork lunch on Sat with leftovers on Sunday. Attendance was good but down a bit from last year. I counted 43 competitors. The official count may be different. There were 14 shooters in the iron sight category and 29 in the scope category. The reflects the current trend at matches everywhere. Some shooters only shot Friday and Sat and some only Sat and Sunday and two shooters only shot on Sunday. The weather was sunny and bright most of the time with a few clouds to break up the monotony. Conditions were trick none the less. I had told two new shooters to look for the wind farm and that is how you know you are close to the range.

I don't have any results from the 22 match so I'll just jump in with the big bore stuff. Friday had very tricky conditions that few figured out. When multiple Master class shooters score in the high teens conditions were kicking your butt. Jim Deitlin was top shooter in irons with a 33 and was so far ahead of the pack that no one could get close the rest of the weekend. Neil Eddington was the top scope shooter.

Saturday was almost a duplicate of Friday with tricky shifting winds and mirage shifting so fast by the time you called a change to the shooter it had changed again. The best bet was shooting a condition but waiting it out and actually getting a shot off before it changed was a challenge. Overall scores were a little higher on Saturday.

Sunday looked to be a bluebird perfect day with a high temp in the low 80's with low humidity and low winds. Scores were much higher with many shooters salvaging their weekend with Sunday's score, me included. There were daily awards each day and 2 day agg awards on Sat and 3 day agg awards on Sunday. The Match directors are Steve and Jodi Decker and they put on a first class quality match each year. A big thanks go out to them and all the club members who also helped with all the associated tasks that go along with running a match.
Here are some final scores:

Iron sight
Overall
1st place Jim Deitlin 94 33,31,30 very consistent, kicked our butts.
2nd place Greg Vest 80 shoot off
3rd place Ian Egbert 80

1st Master Marshall Chase 72

1st AAA Dan Rossiter 78

1st AA Dale Ingstrom 58

1st A-B Paige Wolfe 61 she was also high junior and high woman in irons

Scope class
Overall
1st place Neil Eddington 91
2nd place Karen Chase 85 also high woman
3rd place Mark Chronister 79

1st Master Steve Decker 74

1st AAA Mark O'Malley 74

1st AA Bob Clipp 54

1st A-B Bob Biestek 37

I tried to write it up as well as Cody but I think I came in 2nd. We need more reports of matches like this to encourage folks to come and shoot with us. We gotta keep it going so step up and give us those reports.

John, I had a great time for the 4 days match. All of the shooters are a great bunch to mingle with. For me it's a 7 hr drive but well worth it.
I had a scope that developed a double image so I changed to irons the first time out with the .45-2.6 I had no intentions to use for the match LOL it's a little over gunned for those iron critters but I had fun. Great match.
The .22 match was shot in some strong Montana like winds but everyone got the job done knocking them over.

There is a side match at the Great Lakes Regional where one can win a hand carved wooden animal of high quality. It might be an eagle, a bear, a buffalo or elk but it is always a nice prize. The match works like this: It costs $5 to enter. a number from 1-10 is drawn and say it's a 7. Then if you hit animal 7 in your string of fire then you get to draw a card. At the end of the day you could possibly have 4 cards. The cards are torn in half and one half is tossed into a can. A young lady pulls a card from the can to determine the winner. The winner gets to choose from the carvings present. This is done each day, not one time.

Another thing Steve the match director does is award a 30 pig award to any one who hits all 30 pigs over the course of the weekend. Now we all know pigs are easy and he probably gives a lot of these away. The year I won mine there were 51 competitors and only 2 won the award. Last year only one was given away and this year none were given away. Here's a picture.

While I did not get to shoot this year, you would be hard put to find a better match than those run by Jody & Steve. Especially the 3-day regional. Based on the scores, those first two days must have been a real challenge.

It is a range that should definitely be on everyone's bucket list. I'm tentatively planning on going in August.

Yes Woody, that is the trapdoor box the eagle and pig are sitting upon. Nice box and I get a lot of compliments on it. Thanks. Are we shooting trapdoors in GA again this year? Maybe only at 600 yards?

Lee and company were asking the same while at Raton two weeks ago. I'm in. I asked Jim Kidwell to announce something. I might, could, be coerced into making something again, if we can get some interest going.

Yahooo!! Thanks for the match write-up! I thought it was super! It is so nice being able to read about what went on and they have some great ideas that I might borrow.

Yet another match on my bucket list.....I am going to have to get a bigger bucket!
Thanks again, Cody

Less than a 6hr drive from southern IN. Almost twice that for John or me.

One of the reasons both the nationals at Raton and the Great Lakes Regional were down on attendance is that the NRA, in its infinite wisdom (in collaboration with the WC) scheduled the nats on top of the GLR and its long-standing match date. That took care of ~10 competitors who could not attend both.

John - did Ian cook the meat again this year? Was about the best I've had in 2018. Worth the trip just to eat.

No, Ian did not bring the smoker this year. I spoke with him before the match and he said it took a lot out of him getting up at 3 AM to start the cooker and tending it during the day. He said it was just too much to do and try to concentrate on shooting. He did a small cookout on Sat nite for his group of travelers and companions. I agree that it was some of the best ribs and pulled pork that I had ever had. Debbie Primeau did the pork this year. I'm not sure if she bought it or made it. It was quite mild but good. I didn't get heartburn at all, no Zantac needed.

Cody, thanks for the good words on the write up. I tried to emulate your write ups. You're the best. I would like to see write ups on as many shoots as possible, not just the scores. It will encourage folks to come out and shoot with us and we need to expand our corps of competitors.

Glad you guys liked the spread last year. I wouldn’t have minded doing it but where I have been working out of town it just made it almost impossible to do. I left from work Thursday morning to get there then went back to my place of work Sunday. I wasn’t even able to go home until the weekend after. Next year if things with work have calmed down by then I may do that again.

Ian - every one of us liked your work, not only the evening of the 1st day, but lunch on day 2, as well. We all agreed...... it was absolutely delicious. Hopefully, your schedule will let you work it in again in 2020.

If the dates for Raton that I've heard for 2020 hold, the MI regional timing will work great for a trip west. Hopefully, you can get down to GA for the SE Regional at the end of Oct. Another great match.
