2019 Missoula Silver Dollar Long Range Creedmoor Match

Post by Del »

We shot the Silver Dollar Long Range Creedmoor Match last August 24th and 25th at the Deep Creek Range just outside of Missoula, MT. In attendance was 16 shooters from Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Florida.

The weather was quite nice with normal wind patterns being early morning light to no wind which increased as the morning and afternoon progressed to 5 to 10 mph winds with gusts upwards of 15 to 20 mph. The early shooters definitely had the advantage but with good wind calls, good scores were shot all through the day.

To speed up the match (mostly for Sunday so folks could go home), we shot 15 shots at 900 yds and 15 shots at 1000 yds on Saturday, then shot 15 shots at 800 and another 15 shots at a 1000 yds on Sunday. It gives the match a bit of a weight-forward aspect where we shoot 15 at 800 and 900 and 60 at 1000. But with only having to make on distance change per day, it speeds the match up considerably and gets people on the road home earlier.

Darrell Smithson shot a 533 with an impressive 11x's for first overall. Dave Yount was 2nd overall with a 515 and 3x's and Jim Brennan was 3rd overall shooting a 501 with 6x's. Darrell pretty well cleaned up on the silver dollars as he not only won the overall but also had the highest scores at 800, 900, and 1000 yds. You could hear him jingling as he walked over to his truck!

We had a nice potluck on Saturday evening. The range is a nice range with raised uncovered shooting lines at the shorter ranges up to 900 yds and the 1000 yd line is raised and with a nice large cover. The location of the range is up in the Deep Creek valley and points mostly east and has fairly heavy timber on the south side of the range and a timber covered hillside on the north side. As it is fairly protected, quite a few world records have been set at this range in the high power circles. Here's a link to an interesting article on the range and the high power matches that go on there: http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/201 ... n-montana/. There is a total of I think 16 places that you could shoot from but I have never seen it filled up and using that many places. There are nice heavy cement shooting benches at the 1000 yd line which is nice for practice and load development/checking. A nice well maintained range with great shady camping areas.
