Forsyth Long Range Match

Post by semtav »

Word of the day was windy !!
took me 25-30 min windage to stay on target.
Still was a nice day for shooting. Wind was pretty consistent
Wes was on Fire today, nobody could touch him, but Elwyn gave it a good try.
Gene and Dave Gamble shot side by side and couldn't get away from each other, tying on every target.
Course they used me for their wind dummy as I was shooting just before them and beat me by one on every target !!

Finally got around to cleaning her gun this morning. Found an exorbitant amount of lead in the barrel. Need to start over on that issue.
Getting her weaned off that greasy kid stuff would be a good start.

Brian
I pushed out a bunch of lead too in my .40 when I got home.....a lube blend failure, explains the shotgun pattern. Made up a batch of D. Theodore's mix, it was already showing some promise yesterday.

Yea. I think those back to back relays for 24 shots in a row are really a test of the lube. Plus like Elwyn pointed out, if you put your shell in too soon it melts the lube and super heats the powder. I couldn't touch any metal on my gun fwd of the trigger without burning myself.

Wow, that's hot. Hope it heals up quickly.

I would be worried about possible spontaneous combustion of the cartridge in the rifle with that high a temperature.

Even tho conditions were challenging to say the least, it was still a great day to be out shooting.
Gary Campbell and Kim Williams started out leading the group on the 800 yd target,
But conditions got more challenging as we went on.
After two targets, there was a three way tie for first between Gary, Kim and me with Dave Gamble one shot back.
The 1000 yd target played havoc on everyone but Al Kajin who went from only hitting one on the 800 to hitting 5 on the 1000.
In the End, I kept waiting for Dave to get on one of his streaks and pass me but it never happened.
The bright spots were Mike Caprata coming back from only hitting 4 on the Long Range to hitting 4 on the 1200 yd buffalo and winning that part, and Dex getting 3 on the 1000 yd target.
The buffalo was a real head scratcher when quite a few went from hitting close to the buffalo to hitting 2 targets high and 2 targets right with no apparent change in wind conditions. It happened to 3 shooters in a row at one point.
I'm thinking smudge pots might be needed to see what the wind was really doing up by that hill.
All in all, a fun day, but low scores !!!

I was advised at a fairly young age by grandparents that if I wondered if someone was honest to check the palms of their hands, if there was hair growing in the palms of their hands there was a fair chance they were honest people.

Better Check Semtav's palms.
