June Cheyenne matches Results

Post by 40-65rl »

The first of two weekends of shooting at the Cheyenne Rifle and Pistol Club, Cheyenne, Wyoming are in the books. Not a large group for the fun silhouette match on Friday but we had a good time, A bit of a tricky wind did not help the scores with a tail wind that moved from right to left without much notice and caused no end of issues with the turkeys and rams. Kenny Wasserburger prevailed through this difficult condition with some excellent wind calls he made himself. He was match winner with 28. Lot to be said for that Wyoming wind experience.

The second match was the .22 mid range BPCR match. We shoot all targets at 200 yards. The full size 200 yard mid range target, then a reduced size 300 yard target and finally a reduced 600 yard target. Yes the 600 is pretty small to be shot at 200 yards. It is real test of ammo, rifle and shooting skills. Ammo that shoots fine at 50 or 100 yards may not work that well at 200 and a 3 inch group at 200 will not win you anything in this game. Kenny Wasserburger gave everyone a clinic on matching ammo, rifle and shooting skills. His last three shots on the 600 yard target hit the golf tee we use as a spotting disk in the X ring!!!! Yes he hit three golf tees in a row at 200 yards!!!! Needless to say Kenny was match winner with 290 8X Klaus Schattleirtner came up from Colorado and it was a real pleasure to see him again. He finished first in the position category with 258 4X. First place in any was Jack Odor with 287 7X, Jack was also the high spotter. I shot position, nuff said.

Sunday for the BPTRA Mid Range match was to be pretty nice day. The forecast was light winds, 15-20 from the South, Southeast. THEY LIED!!!! For the 200 and 300 yards the wind was 25-30 and Steve Anderson shot a very nice 100 3X on the 200 target and Michael Rix had an excellent 94 3X on the 300 yard target. When we got to the 600 yard line the wind amped up to 25 with gusts 35-40. Scope stands, mats and any not nailed down went flying. Folks from Wyoming and Colorado are used to these breezy days but even they had a tough time of it. John Madden, from Idaho, was shooting iron sights at 600 and at one time told me he had more than 22 minutes of left wind in. With some great wind calling by Steve Anderson Michael Rix scored a 90 2X in the wind. Cody Smith, with great spotting from Jim Rodebaugh, scored 78. Michael Rix was our match winner with 283 7X, Michael's spotter, Steve Anderson was the high spotter and Cody Smith 1st Any with a 270 5X, Eddie Hayes was 2nd in any, 261 3X, Klaus Schattleirtner was first in position with a 211. Jack Odor, who is always in the mix broke his firing pin and because it is was custom made it could not be replaced at the range and not finish the match. He'll be back.

Robert Garibay, founder and high puma of the BPTRA was in attendance and helped me with some of the finer points of this game that is fairly new to me. Thank you Robert for your support. I see we signed up a few new members also, that's great!!!! Check out the BPTRA web site for match dates, results and all the info you need to get into this really fun game. I guarantee you will learn a lot about your ammo loads and shooting skills. Hitting a ram silhouette at 500 yards in the nose will score you a 6 or 7 in this game.

Many, many thanks to the shooters who attended these three days of shooting at the Cheyenne Rifle and Pistol Club. They are all wonderful folks and it was pleasure to host these matches for them.

Many thanks to folks who made donations of items for this match. Green Mountain Barrels, SPG, Hogdon Powder, John Walters Wad and Tin, Starline brass and big shout out to Swiss Powder who continues to support our matches. All these folks are greatly appreciated.

Because of the "Black Death" I could not provide the usual bologna sandwiches but we got by with a school lunch of Lunchables and cheese snack packs. See how it goes for the July matches.

The next Mid Range Target matches in Cheyenne are Saturday, July 11, it is 300, 500 and 600 any position and Sunday is three 600 yard targets. Awards for Saturday and Sunday matches with the high aggregate score for the two days winning $100 cash prize. The high spotter for the aggregate will also receive an award.

Been asked about Klaus Schattleirtner's equipment list as the position winner:

40-65 Browning Highwall, 65 grains of Old Enynsford 2F, .25 compression, poly wad, Federal Large Rifle match primer, 400 grain Money bullet by BACO, MVA 6 power scope.

Also want to give a sincere thank you to Steve Anderson of Wyoming Sight Drifter for sponsoring the High Spotter Award for both the .22 BPCR Mid Range and the BPTRA mid range. Makes a great product and is a strong support of black powder shooting. Thank you!

Great match Dick! I know I had a good time. I actually enjoy the winds. Shooting in the calm is boring!
We are all looking forward to the next one, thanks again for all the hard work you put into this.

I have to echo Cody’s sentiments.

Great time was had, great people, to See John and Brian show up, icing on the cake for me.

As Meatloaf once said 2 out of 3 ain’t bad.
