I am just getting back into black powder shooting after a short break (40 yrs). Have recently bought a Pedersoli 1859 Sharps in .45 cal. Pedersoli cast bullets are very expensive so I have bought their mold and a friend has offered to get me started casting my own. Question is where should I start in lead alloy; pure lead or some alloy? For info. bullet weight is 380 grains (bullet is 3 band ringtail). Thus far I have been shooting 50 grains 2f or 3f (still experimenting, with paper cartridge Ped. says you can go up to 60 grains). My guess is muzzle v is not too high with the combination I am shooting now. Twist is 1:18.
My long term solution- Deposit is down on Shiloh #1 sporter, 45-70, now for the 22 month wait
