Dove tail blank...

Post by '63 Shiloh »

Hi all,

On my Shiloh 1863 Sporter, I have a dove-tail blank. It is right at the start of the barrel, I have a round barrel. The standard rear sporter sight is in the normal position and I have a soldered front sight.

Question is, why would this blank be where it is?

Any idea of its purpose?

Thanks Fellers,

Mike

Obviously a previous owner was playing with sight location. It might have also been mounted with a scope.

Any evidence of a matching front dovetail?

BTW - on the Canadian GunNutz forum, my avatar is "Sharps '63".

Maybe it's for a level, if not you can still use it for such.

Spirit level?

A spirit level that close to your eyes would be useless. Put a rear sight there and see what I mean.

Blank out the slot and live with it. Makes your rifle unique.
