Bullet weight for 54

Post by Rich Siegel »

I have two Shiloh military carbines in 54 caliber, one an 1863 and the other a Robinson. I usually shoot a 490 grain Rapine Christmas tree bullet but I wouldn't mind shooting a lighter bullet for 50 and 100 yard targets. What bullet weights do you shoot? Anyone shoot a lighter bullet?

My '63 carbine just takes a charge of 50 grains of FFG GOEX in a paper cartridge. The Robinson has a shorter chamber though and cuts off the end of the 50 grain powder cartridge leaving some powder on top of the breech. I haven't checked to see exactly how much powder though. I would assume it would do well with a lighter bullet.

I shoot a modified Steve Brooks bullet it comes in at about 365 i think will weigh some later. Also used the NEI 381 which is a short bullet at about 316 if I remember correctly. Dean says its the same or simular to the confederate sharps design. it worked at 50yrds great but to light for 100 yrds.
