Ringtail bullet--finally

Post by Free_Stater »

I got my ringtail mold off eBay. It's an aluminum NEI and supposedly throws a 500 grain traditional Sharps pointed bullet.

The sprue cutter, however, is bent slightly at the pivot, so I'm getting some feathering on the base of the bullet. Other than that, though, the mold works great. I've made up a number of cartridges using this bullet but haven't had a chance to test them yet. I'm hoping to do that one day this week.

I knew I'd find one eventually, and now I have it. This is good.

I trimmed the flanges on the bases of the bullets with my thumbnail, and finally I got the chance to do some test firing with the rounds I cooked up. They worked flawlessly. What more can I say? I am going to tweak the powder charge a bit, though; I think I can get 2-3 more grains in the cartridges.

Keep an eye on eBay. There were two on there when I got mine, but the other one also sold. I'm not sure if Shiloh marketed the Rapine style, or if it was sold under the Rapine name.

If all else fails, the easy way to go would be to call Steve Brooks and get one from him. His Brooks Moulds company is linked from the Shiloh website, and considering how much I had to pay for this one, his are a pretty good deal, especially since his work will be of considerably better quality.

Now that is a nice, finish paper cartrigde you have there. I do have a Brooks Mould for my 63 Shiloh .54 cal rifle. Mr. Brooks puts out a nice product.

Hey, Sandy. Again, nice moulds, and I might be making an order one day.

Please help us out if you have suggestions on cartridge making, loads, etc. for our 63s, but I think the forum management kind of frowns on commercial advertising. I'm sure you have a lot to offer, because if you weren't interested in the 63s you certainly wouldn't have gone to the trouble of tooling up for making accessories that are so necessary to us.

All the best, and again, welcome.
