PINING AWAY FOR MY CARBINE

Post by 4570sharps »

Back in 1987, I bought a Shiloh '63 military carbine. It was used but in excellent condition.
It was an early wolf head barrel farmingdale with a three digit serial number. Man, did that
thing shoot good! I think I payed $ 450 for it. Boy, those were the days! Black powder was $7.00/lb
Lead was only a few cents per lb. and gas was about .80 a gallon! I would burn up 100 rnds. almost
every weekend. When I wasn't shooting, I was rolling paper ctgs. and casting those ringtail bullets!
Musket caps were still sold in the 250 ct. tins, and back then I could afford to buy them by the 1000 !
I now have another farmingdale, but it's a military rifle and has a 4 digit serial number. No wolf head,
has minor piting in the bore, but still shoots very good. Not as good as that carbine though!
In 1990, I sold the carbine so I could buy a Uberti win. '73 rifle! I still have the '73, and it is a tack
driver with black or smokeless, but I sure miss that old shiloh carbine !
