Nipple thread sizes?

Post by Naphtali »

A possible "situation" has arisen. I have Alexander Henry-style cap lock Big Bore Express rifles that use platinum lined 1/4 x 24 musket cap nipples. A Shiloh Sharps 1863 rifle is lumbering in my direction. The Sharps uses 5/16 x 28 nipples rather than 1/4 x 24s, I believe. Will Shiloh create my rifle with 1/4 x 24 threads for nipple - that I can use my platinum lined nipples? OR does anyone know of a source for platinum lined 5/16 x 28 nipples?

And a parenthetic question: If there is a significant difference between the two different nipple thread sizes in withstanding high ignition pressure, which is superior?

Regarding thread dimensions, they are either 1/4 x 24 or 1/4 x 28 - I think 1/4 x 28.

Rick Weber in Tennesse makes excellent platinum lined nipples. You can send him a nipple to be lined or let him know the specifications.

He made a platinum lined nipple for my first generation Parker Hale Whitworth. I mailed him a money order and had it in my possession within a week. Price is around $50.00 depending upon type of nipple.

He is a fellow shooter and a great guy to boot.

Matt:

Many thanks for your information. It is especially timely because Shiloh will not create nipple seat-threads in common with my platinum lined nipples. I wonder how long it will be until the rifle shows up at my front door? It's in the current production batch.
