A nuance of manufacture

Post by Naphtali »

Having chatted with a member of Shiloh's support staff today, I learned of a nuance of manufacture of 1863s that slows their completion compared with 1874s. Parts fitting, specifically in the breech, has significantly closer tolerances than cartridge breeches. This accounts for each one requiring more time to completion for an otherwise identically tricked out rifle.

My rifle is intended to be a hunting rifle with no pretension to being satisfactory for "long range" target shooting. At first glance it will strongly resemble a single-trigger #2 Creedmoor . . . at first glance. Between closer tolerance fitting and my non-Shiloh-standard parts, I have no difficulty understanding its slower than anticipated completion.

Those of you also having similar non-NSSA compliant 1863s made, I hope this information helps to relieve some of your concerns.
