Farmingdale Date of Manufacture

Gentlemen,
I just picked up a Farmingdale 1863 Military Rifle, #234. Does anyone know when it would have been built?

That's pretty early. There was a good article in the 1987 Gun Digest on the Shiloh Sharps. That article says that they started with #200. Production started in 1972 so it would be a good bet it was made in 1972.

Good to know. I figured it was early, but I didn't know they started at 200.

I got mine, brand new from Dixie Gun Works in 1978. It is serial #504. Was production that slow at the time or did they have a numbering system that was something other than consecutive numbers? I have asked Shiloh in the past but they do not have any of the Farmingdale era records.

That low ser # could be for the paper loads. I say this because I got my 45/70 cartridge farmingdale in late 78 or early 79 and my # is in the 2500

As I said earlier, read the article in the 1987 edition of the Gun Digest. You will see there that there wasn't much correlation between the serial number and the actual day the rifle was built. Having said that, what difference does it really make. They were good rifles regardless of the year they were made.
