Farmingdale 1863 45 Cal Carbine

Post by triggerfinger »

Hi first post on here. Nice forum and good information from what I've seen here! Have a question, I've got a Shiloh Farmingdale 1863 45 Cal Carbine and am looking for a good bullet to cast for it. What bullet has anyone else done well with? I'm thinking of ordering Steve Brooks 1863 ringtail mould. Anyone shoot these?

Check w Moose mould. I have one but in 54. I also have A brooks Mold that fits charlie tubes. I like both mould. Moose mould is alum block heats up faster. the moose mould I have is not listed. its a sumi wad cutter stile. brooks is a custom made for me but close to what he shows.
See post about alloy pic. of the moose bullet is there.

Thanks Snapcap. I ordered a Lyman 457191 mould and going to see how that shoots. I've spoke with Steve about getting a ringtail mould made up and will if this doesn't work for me.

OK as long as the bullet a good fit you should be able to get it to shoot. If target shooting out to 100 yards I would start w 32 grn 2ffg. And work up. 2 grn at a time. Group should close up or open up. As you go then fine toon. My 54 like 38 and 42. If you look at the alloy post you will see the bullet and the target I shot with it.
Stay away from 3fffg it will erode or etch you gas check plate.

I use pure lead. I've tried different mix of hardness never happy with any of it.

I've got about 500lbs of pure lead so should be set for awhile. Thanks for the info about 3f etching the plate. I don't use it but nice to know that I won't destroy what I sent to Charlie to work on. That also includes a mod 63 musket 54 cal. These Mod 63 are new for me, I have Shilohs and C Sharps 1874, 75 and 85's in various calibers am ;looking forward to seeing what I can do with these.
