Twist rate .50 caliber percussion

Post by dra1911 »

Just ordered a .50 caliber '63 sporting rifle. I was told it was a 1 in 36" but I read in a posting the twist was 1 in 28". Which one is it? Wanting to shoot long heavy bullets. What is the max powder I can load in it? Lastly, any suggestions on bullet molds and lead type?

I know you can mark a ram rod and use a tight jag/patch and see how much the mark on the ram rod turns when pushed thru the barrel to get an idea what the twist rate is. Compare the amount of rotation of the mark on the rod with the length of the barrel. Example....if the barrel is a twist rate of 1-32 the rod turns one whole rotation in the barrel if it's 32in. length. If the rod turned 1/2 rotation in the 32 in. barrel then the twist is 1-64.(one turn in 64 inches of rifling twist)
