Removing Gas Check

Post by Jim Stewart »

Can anyone direct me to instructions on how to remove the gas check from the breech block of an original New Model 1863 rifle, please?

I fired it once and then a lot of difficulty opening the action after firing. I suspect the block is working to seal the chamber but not working freely enough to be easily retracted as the lever is lowered.

Please feel free to suggest other causes for my problem.

Cordially,

Hi Jim,
I just use a wooden dowel to carefully tap it out by the shortest possible route.
