Pyro pellets in '63
Hey Buffalo Bob
You most certainly can use Pyro pellets in your '63!!!
I ran it past the maker of Pyrodex and they gave me the green light. My Shiloh Military Rifle is in .50 and I roll a .512 sized/lubed bullet with a pellet to make an authentic looking, easy handling round. Ignition is faultless due to the smear of BP on the base of the pellet and the hole in it.
I tried both nitrated and unnitrated paper and ended up using an onion skin type for complete combustion of the paper.
No powder spillage and 100% uniformity every time. Accurate in the bargain.
There were paper cartridges loaded with compressed pellets of BP during the Civil War. In fact, someone patented one with three grades of powder for a progressive burning rate.
I believe that the powder was moistened with alcohol and shellac prior to compression. Must have been one dangerous operation to be around!
I've also loaded them in my 50-70 Military Rifle and there wasn't much poop, but it sure was a quick way to load up some plinking rounds in a hurry.

Pyro Pellets
Rick
Ignition is faultless with pyro pellets as they have a smear of BP on the bases. They also have a hole up the middle of them to aid combustion.
I tried them in 44-40 cases (30 gr pellets) and they are great - accurate and easy to load compared to loose powder.
They only problem I had was using them in a .44 cap & ball. Ignition was erratic after the first 6 rds and even comical with the ball bouncing back along the ground from the target and smoke trails like tracers!

Guys
Is this the place to talk about Pyrodex?
Seems like a dirty word most places, on the BPCR based forums anyway. I use it cos I ain't got a choice, which I won't go into here.
Is it fair to say that you use it EXACTLY as you would BP? I'm using it in .45 cartridges, drop tubing and compressing about 3 eighths inch, under a 520 grn bullet. Ignition is 215 Fed mag, rifle is Sharps and HiWall.
I'm getting OK results on the target but wonder if BP would be more accurate/consistent. Not being able to use BP, in my situation, is a PITA but England has weird laws. Go figure
