The real Big 50

Post by Orville »

The real big 50 makes meat again. I watched this deer come in from ½ mile away even got some video of him as he got closer. I put the camera down and picked up the rifle. I watched as he vented his anger on a juniper tree and then a small bull berry bush. At this point he was about 200 yards. He proceeded to cross a coulee coming out on the other side. I was really looking for a mule deer with a wider rack, but this guy had 5 on each side and was tall. When he stopped on the hill above the coulee, again about 200 yards I thought what a perfect shot, I flipped up the Lawrence sight, (the notch on the bottom of the staff is 200 yards) put the front sight on his shoulder and touched the trigger, he went down and was done for the count. When I was done dressing him out, I got out the range finder and checked the distance back to where I was when I shot, 205 yards.
The load was 100 grains of Goex Fg, card wad, a lube wad, another card wad and a 473 grain paper patched bullet.
After skinning him we checked the bullet path, it had busted his shoulder, went through the back bone where the bullet fragmented destroying his lungs and the top of the heart, two pieces of the bullet was found under his hide and another piece had went on through.
The bullet alloy was 1-60 which duplicates the original sharps load.
The photo of the hill is where I shot from, at the very top and I’m standing where the deer fell. The knife in the photo, is a copy of an original Sheffield English bowie, I have the original and Rdnck made the copy, it was first blood for the knife.

Nice buck! Really nice. And way to go standing up for the poor and defenseless shrubbery as well!

Nice going Orville. That is a really good deer by any standard. Good shot, too. These rifles that have the original twists and chambers are well and truly a cut above when you feed them ammo that is loaded like the original rounds. They don't foul, you don't have to wipe or use a blow tube between shots, and the original specification rounds kill like lightning. Heck of a deal if you ask me. Shoot straight, rdnck.

Nice buck and great shot Orville, 205 yards, that's good shooting, and you did with a original load. Old Jim White would be proud.

Congratulations Orville, Nice going! I shot my decent 4 pt Whitetail last Sunday AM near the crick by White Earth. I was counting on only being able to hunt the first Sat and Sunday, so decided to take the .270. As it turned out, I got a standing shot at about 125 yds and could have used about any old rifle. Would have been a lot more enjoyable with The Sharps, Spencer or 44-77 Remington rolling block. That's how it goes. Had to find enough snow to fill my truck bed and pack the body cavity because it was going to be in the mid to high 60's before I got home. That worked very well with the roll-up bed cover down. Felt down right frigid when you put your hand on it. He will be very fine eating.

Orville,

Congratulations on a fine buck. It's pretty cool to see the old style work so well. Kinda reminds me of the saying, if it ain't broke don't fix it! Once again when the smoke clears it's proof it ain't broke.

Orville,

Very nice shooting and a nice buck also!
I really like that dark stock finish on your .50, did you request it?

Great story with pictures. I read this about 10 times!
I had gotten possession of a big "50" gun early in the fight, and was making considerable noise with it.

Those Mule Deer are impressive. I have taken a lot of white tails but never a Muley. Good show Orville.

The Lawrence and blade sight is the way to go, it's a reliable combination.

Orville, I saw a mule deer shot off the old Rhodes ranch in White Sands New Mexico that had a 36 inch spread and was pretty impressive but your deer is a better looking head in my book. I really like the symmetry and long vertical points! He's a beauty!
Was this any where near your cabin that you posted pictures of last year? MD
