deer season over
It sounds like you should be happy they don't shoot back.

Gussy
I almost let this guy walk by. I was sitting in a brush pile messing with my new video camera when he was already past me
The .58 put him down with out a flinch.
Some day I might get that rifle finished

No it's a GM barrel.
I started building this rifle back in the 80's and it still isn't done . The stock is from a hunk of sugar maple I cut it has a very nice tiger in it but the acid and fire I used for the finish is still turning dark, but It still looks very nice in the sun.

Kurt, I'm working on a new percussion Hawken modeled after one of the 3 known pistol grip original Hawken rifles. I hope it does not take me as long as it has you. But the flinter I built took 2 yrs and I would like to cut that by 75%. We shall see. I used the aquifortis stain on maple for the flinter and like yours, it was really dark. But I built a rifle for Tamra and used the same bottle of acid and same technique and it came out a beautiful medium red-brown. Really nice and much different. I think the difference is in the wood itself.
Anyway, really nice job on that deer. I'd love to see one that big this year.

I used a full sizes set of Hawken plans for this rifle. I'm going to refinish the wood someday. It started out being a full stock but I made a bad cut when hogging out the barrel Chanel
That buck is only a 2-1/2 year old and it field dressed out 235#
His neck looks like he was chasing Gussy's Doe's

A nice deer indeed at that dressed weight. I'll have to look and see what that works out to on the hoof but my guess is a bit over 300#
Coming up on the secondary rut now so they should be looking pretty active indeed. Maybe even more so than the first rut in some ways since so many does will be refusing.

Nice buck and nice shot. I am always amazed they can get so close without us noticing. Gus saw 15 deer on muzzleloader opener and 5 on Sunday. Distance and no clear shooting lanes prevented a shot. He went out this afternoon and used his grunt tube. He thought another hunter was in the area as he was grunting back and forth with a deer. He never did see the deer, too much brush and inexperience prevented him from getting his first deer. We have until the 12th of December this year.
Congratulations on the buck.

Hi Marty.
Gus is a fine Lad and shows a lot of self control. He will get his deer when other hunters clear out as it gets colder.
Deer are a curious critter and that gets them in trouble. I have dozed off a few times sitting in the warm sun and when I opened the eyes have had a young doe looking at me not more then 15 feet away.
Tell Gus I said HI.
