1863 bullet style

Post by dm3280 »

I am shooting an .54 cal 1863 style Sharps from Shiloh and was wondering if I could get some suggestions on a good bullet style and from who I can order the mould. I have a Rapine mould that cast a bullet with a ring tail on it. It shoots great at 100 yards but when I get out to 200 yards it is more like a shotgun. My group at 200 yards is about 10 inches.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

DM328,
My goodness, a 10" group at 200yds. with my older "63 carbine would leave me ecstatic! I have a rifle (this one) that has a useless 200 yd. notch anyway, the others are fine, but still I'd be happy. I use a 400 grain wadcutter type bullet from Shiloh that has seen better days, (the mould), but shoots fine. Also just bought an RCBS Hoch .540 adj. mould that is minie' style but is so far not disappointing me. Just started after all these years using a flat based cartridge with bullet inserted. Time consuming but a "wow!" shooter. Your Rapine "ringtail" has been recommended often in various posts' prior. I didn't help your bullet search but you inspired me!
Good luck, Gregg

To dm3280,
Oh yes, how could I have forgotton. Kirk's son Levi had a bullet made expressively for his "3 bander", this young man is a fine shot and uses a Brooks' bullet at either 450 grns. (what Mr. Brooks thought) or 485 as mentioned by Kirk. I spoke to Mr. Brooks concerning this bullet and he can be reached 1-(406)- 782-5114. I nearly had this custom mould made but fell on anorher deal.
Hope you find a good one, post it if you do please. Gregg
