Paul Jones 450015
Anyone shooting this big dude in a .45-70... and can you compare it to his lighter 540gr 45002 ? Thanks,

spook, I have the 45001, 45002, and the 45003. I am still working with all three of them, but I bought the 01 and 02 because the 03 is, in MHO, difficult to work with. I just haven't made a load that it really cares for yet. I have had acceptable results with it, but I am looking for a top performer.
I will be testing both the 45001 and 02 this week, just got them a week ago, and will let you know how they work. Randy

Spook2,
For what it is worth, my experience with the 45001 is that my .45-100 likes it with the load I am using and my .45-70 does not like it with the loads I have tested in that particular rifle. Again, for what it is worth, that bullet in my rifles seems to like to be pushed hard. But, I have acquired a new .45-70 and will try the PJ Creedmoor in it. I have to say that I really like the PJ bullet; it looks right, but my current .45-70 likes the frumpy SAECO 745 - a lot. The PJ 45001 has won a LR match for me in my .45-100. Ain't the mysteries of nature grand?

I shot some of the 570 smerkels at the 500 meter rams at the CTSA and got my best score on rams yet. I was using 66.5 grains of cartridge, .220 compression, .060 Walters wads, fed 210 primers. Lee Stone did the casting on these so I didn't even weigh them, just loaded them and shot them. Glad I did.

Spook, sorry no one has addressed this particular bullet mould in the Jones line. When I ordered my 45001 and 45002 moulds a few weeks ago, Paul and I talked about this mould (the 45015) and he said that some of the people shooting it were having good results. I didn't order it because I already had the Smerker mould and wanted something a little lighter in weight and actually had Paul make two custom moulds. Minor alterations on his existing moulds to make things clear.
Something always seems to keep popping up to keep me from shooting these bullets, but hopefully tomorrow I will be able to give them a try. I will post here if I am able to shoot. Randy

Spook - My shooting partner David has a modified version of the 45015 that he shoots in his 45-2.6". His has a slightly heavier nose and shallower grease grooves to net 572 grains with 20:1. He requested these changes from Paul Jones as he has noted cleaner burning and better accuracy in his 45-2.6" and 45-110 with additional bullet weight (he shoots the 625 grain NEI 350A in his 110). David shot his smallest 10 shot 200 yard group in any caliber with this bullet and his 45-2.6" earlier this week. The average velocity of that group was 1297 fps and it was with Goex Ffg for whatever that's worth. The shank of this bullet is the same as the 45001. You could easily seat it in the 45-70 although 560 grains is a lot of weight for a 45-70 to propel. - Nick

Gentlemen, Thanks to all.
As I read your feedback, at least at my limited experience level, my sense says stay with the lighter 45002 (he doesn't offer the 45001, now; though I guess he can and would do anything). I wonder, if under certain conditions, if it might be asking the .45-70 to do a too much with that bigger 450015.
I've sent Mr. Jones a bore slug to have him match it to his 45002 and just see how it tosses down from my spiffy new Sporter#3.
Again, thanks,
