I think there's some variation to this, but mine is marked "Business .45" in small letters on the top center of the barrel immediately in front of the action. On the right side of the barrel- in even smaller numbers that were tough to find- is an upside-down "2 1/10" marking.

I think any other model of 1874 will just have a caliber marking (.40, .44, etc.) on the top of the barrel and the cartridge length may or may not be marked. Reading through this it doesn't sound very helpful but maybe it is.

Mine is marked on the top barrel flat in front of the receiver, calibre 45, and right below that is 2 1/10. Sporter #1.

Hi Turk, the upside down numbers were so you could just roll the gun in your hands and everything would read right side up without having to swap ends.

Hi Turk
my original 45 2 7/8 is marked with a small 45 between the lawrence sight and breech, on the side flat is the 2 7/8. I wonder if shiloh marks their guns the same way?
My carbine is either a sharps conversion or a meacham conversion and it is marked 40/70 SHARPS STRAIGHT in front of the lawrence sight.
