Just picked up my 45-90 last Monday on the way up to my place in Darby,
Mt. This is by far the best rifle I have ever owned. It has exceded my expectations. Loaded up 20 rounds to shoot before I left, 90grains of
1f under a 535grain 457132. Slid one in the chamber, braced myself for
the first shot, touched off that front trigger and heard the bullet smack
through the target at 100 yards. To my suprise the recoil was about the
same as a .243. The bullets were kind of all over the 12" target, but I
need to now fine tune my loads & get used to sights(MVA rear with the
extra windage). Did not have a blow tube with me , so I blew 2-3 breaths
down the barrell between shots with my mouth. Once, I did manage to
get a couple of bullets in one hole. I did notice when I put a brush through the barrell alot of residue, almost like unburned powder. Bought
some 2f, maybe it might be a better combination for the 45-90.
Best gun I ever had

44mag.,
That Darby country sure is nice. The wife has a neice that lives in Conner, MT. Lotsa elk in that country ..... My 45/90 Shiloh likes 85.0 gr. of GOEX Cartridge with the 457132 bullet and a Fed. 215 primer with all grooves covered. You might give it a try. Two hundred yard groups are 2" or less. Good luck,

44magnum,
You need to get you two more moulds. A Paul Jones 540gr Creedmoor #45001 and a Paul Jones 570gr Smerker #45003. My .45/90 likes both of them better than the 457132 Lyman Postell, althouth it does like the Postell OK. But you will see the difference with your first casting session with a Paul Jones mould.
And I have done what you did and one hot day really learned the value of a blow tube after firing, I don't know how manny rounds but that puppy was a lot hotter than I thought it would be.
Your love affair with that rifle is only beginning.

Sharps 45x2.4 loads
I have been working on a #1 sporter .45x2.4 for most of the summer and have finally met with success. For a while I wasn't sure whether this black powder cartridge thing was such a good idea. However, I discovered that most of the roadblocks came from myself. So, Here are two loads that are producing identical results of 2 1/4'' groups for five shots at 200 yds for me off of X sticks.
1. WW primer, 85 gr. Goex cartridge, .060 poly wad, Lyman
535 gr. postell, 1/30 alloy
2. same load except 70 gr. of Swiss 1 1/2
In both loads, the bullets are seated so that 1/2 of the top band is covered. Very similar to what Kodiak described. Cases, bullets and powder is weighed to within .5gr or so. No crimp.
So, it's time to hit the road. Headed to the Sagebrush shoot in Alliance, Ne. on Aug. 28 & 29. Figured you-all needed a little competition.
