African Safari

Post by rdnck »

I just got a call from Gunner 500 who is boarding a plane in Atlanta on his final leg home from a Safari on the South Africa/Mozambique border. Gunner took an old, hard bossed extremely large bodied dagga boy Cape buffalo bull with his Shiloh Number 3 Sporter in 45-70. He was shooting a 525 grain paper patched bullet at 30-1 over 75 grains of KIK 3f. The shot was about 45 yards in thick jess, and when the bullet hit, the buffalo whirled and ran about 60 yards and stopped. A second shot through the shoulders ended it.

Gunner also shot a zebra and a 56 1/2 inch kudu on the trip. Pictures will follow in a day or two, as Gunner is airborne as I type this, and hasn't made it home quite yet.

A two shot kill on a Cape buffalo is not exactly common, and makes the point that a 45-70 Sharps and traditional paper patched loads definitely get the job done. Shoot straight, rdnck.

We'll anticipate a report. Sounds like really good performance on both animals. That size kudu aren't behind every bush.

Let's see, the shot was at 45 yards and then the buff ran for 60 yards. Could have gotten really interesting if the buff had been running towards the shooter. I've seen how fast a buff can cover 45 yards and that is why the PH carries a double, probably a 470 Nitro.

So ask yourself if this PH had been carrying the 458 Lott could he have recovered from the first shot and worked the bolt fast enough for the second before the buffalo got to him?

Here we have a guy with the balls to take his Shiloh 45-70 and paper patched black powder ammo to Africa and kill a Cape buffalo. A single shot rifle in which he placed his confidence and bet on his own skill and the reliability of the rifle and ammunition to take what has often been called the most dangerous of the Big Five. He does it with two well placed shots.

Now we have two porch monkeys that are sniveling because the attending PH wasn't carrying a double rifle and that the Cape buffalo didn't run toward the hunter before the animal died. You guys need to get a life and tip your hats to a better man than either of you will ever be. He had the guts to place his life and about $10,000 of his own money on the line to do this and to get it on DVD. All you guys are doing is saying "what if" from behind a computer screen. You really do need to get out more and try to grow a set. rdnck

Rednk, I've spent over a year in the game fields of Africa. I have a great respect for the animals that can fight back and I have no desire to antagonize a Cape buffalo by any means. I also respect the cojones of anyone who would tackle one with a 45-70 single.

I would have to say that if that buffalo had decided to charge from 45 yards that the PH with a bolt gun will put more bullets into the buffalo than a double gun shooter could. My hat is off to Gunner for some fine shooting.

77 I agree. :D you can ratchet a lot more rounds through a good bolt rifle then a two shooter in a short time.

The "idiot" in the video is Mark Sullivan, a PH from Phoenix. He usually carries a .577 Nitro Express double. He knows what he is doing. Watch some of his videos of buffalo, hippo, lion etc charges. He is no idiot. If a guy wants to hunt capes with a single shot .45-70, that's fine by me, but to make it more sporting, I do not think he should have anyone backing him up. It doesn't take all that long to feed a second or third round into a single shot, if one knows what he is doing. If the buff gets the hunter, well, that's all in the sport of it.
