Home for the holiday

Post by Up In Smoke »

It been quite some time since I haven't had to spend my Thanksgiving wknd out trying to get my deer tag filled. Just in time too, as an Arctic express is setting in for the next few days. Got this one on Sunday.

That's a great deer made a lot better taken with a Sharps. A story would be good. Congratulations.

This was a hunt that had a bit of a twist involved. Me and the deer actually crossed paths the day before. We had a face-off for about 5 min. at about 60-70 yds, and only once did he show me a broadside shot but I was unable to drop the hammer before he turned again to face me straight on. Finally I elected to put the sights on his chest just below the base of his neck. He hit the ground immediately and was on his back with legs kicking in the air. I thought I was in business, but chambered another round just in case. As I started walking over to him, much to my astonishment he found his feet and got up and took off. Needless to say I was sickened and having serious regrets over my shot selection. I got on his tracks and only found a speck of blood here and a couple drops there before the blood trail diminished and tracks disappeared among those of other deer. So I went back out again the following day and returned to the area and got back on the trail again to see if I had missed anything but to no avail. Anyhow, as I was heading back to my outfit I noticed a doe staring at me from about 60 yds. As I looked through my binoculars I could see there was another deer with her but could not get a clear view due to the thick timber. Finally it stepped out and I could tell it was a decent buck that soon offered a broadside shot. He only went less than a 100 yds. But the best reward was when I skinned him out that I discovered that he was in fact the same deer I hit the day before. As for my rifle, it is a Hartford in 45-70. My load was 70 grns of Goex FF behind a 410 grn PPB.

Good story and one you'll remember. You were able to satisfy 2 things. 1 You got a deer and better yet 2 you got the one from the day before and could rest easy wondering about him. Definately doesn't always work out that way. Thanks.

OK, so where did the day before's bullet strike? Just wondering how a 45-70 knocks a buck down like that only to have him get up and run away.
