Alma Michigan

This is where you can place your scores from the matches. It uses an excel spread sheet! If you send me your sheet of scores I can put it on the forum and provide a link where everyone can view it.

Alma Michigan

Post by Kurt »

I just finished the Alma Michigan two day Silhouette match. I think there where 32 shooters. Not sure.
This was my second two day NRA silhouette match and I must say I had a great time. The match is well run and best of all what a fine bunch of shooters to shoot with. Very friendly match that is worth putting up with going through Chicago and Gary Indiana to attend.
Saturday after the match they had a grill going and fine Hamburgers and hot dogs served as well as three side dishes and chocolate chip cookies.
The range has dry camping and a shower and I think some slept in the clubhouse.
Ten range is laid out very nice and the line is under cover, this was very good for the rain we shot in that morning.
This was my second visit at this match and it wont be my last.
I'm taking the long way home by the northern rout over the Mackinac Bridge to avoid the cities. :D Besides it's good to see the old hunting grounds going home and take a swim in the lake.

That's great Kurt! I've been shooting the Alma 3 day Regional for several years now and it is on my must attend list. As you said, great folks and a good shooting venue. Heck, if we keep bragging it up there will be so many folks going there to shoot we'll need to pre-register.

John.

I never was a silhouette shooter. I spend just about all of my time at long range and gong shoots. Just last spring I started at Alma and man I had a very bad finish with a single digit score after the first round, but I felt that watching those critters sometimes go over like Thor hit them with his hammer and other times they looked like they where brushed with a feather before they fell over :) this made me want to do this again.
This trip I didn't feel as bad at the end of the day, things are coming together. The great bunch of people there really helps you feel comfortable.
Next trip up I will change my rout to avoid the Big City's.

Watching those animals fall is great fun and a real challenge. Unlike target matches, it is either an X or a 0. Nothing else goes on the scorecard. And, the matches at Alma are a great place to enjoy same with a bunch friendly & helpful like-minded folks. You are about the same distance from the matches at Friendship, IN and the St. Louis Benchrest club and even closer to the matches at Effingham, IL. You'll find the folks there (and at all the silhouette matches I've had the pleasure to attend) to be very similar to those you've met at Alma.

As much as I would like to shoot like him, I'm "the other Glenn" and am guessing that is Glenn Fewless you are talking about. Fewless is one hell of a shot (and gunsmith) and also won the 3-day Great Lakes Regional iron sight match at Alma in early July (I only managed 1st AAA scope).

Yes it is the other Glenn :D
He sure did a fine job with the irons. There where times on Saturday in the heavy wet and rain for a spell when no air was moving and I had a scope on this time to see the critters better then the last time and at times all I could see was a black cross on the smoke :D I don't know how he managed to shoot as well as he did with the tang sights. Fine job for sure.

The really amazing part about Glenn Fewless's performance last weekend is that his multi-million dollar Wesson had a broken firing pin when the match started. I offered to let him use my Browning BPCR that I took as a spare and that is what he shot. He used is own ammo (loaded for his Wesson). He also did not have is usual spotter with him this weekend so he got stuck shooting with Greg and I who shared spotting duty for him. So it boiled down to he was using a "strange" gun, with different sights than he was used to, a load that wasn't proven in the gun he shot, spotters he usually doesn't shoot with etc. etc. His winning iron sight score for Saturday was an impressive 33 and he shot a 2nd place score of 28 (by chicken count) on Sunday. All in all a VERY impressive feat. As usual fun was had by all and we had a great time.

Exactly what Kurt and John have been saying and why the 3-day Great Lakes Regional each July is one of the "must shoot" matches for us each season. Only request I have for next year is that the rams in the .22BPCR match be set on the back edge (rather than the front edge) of that 10" wide rail so they can actually be knocked off when hit. ;)

It took me 14-1/2 hours to get home going over the bridge following the lake shore on Rt. 2 :D good trip going past my old hunting grounds.
Save me a spot for the Sept match.

Will certainly be looking forward to having you there Kurt. Glenn, you're right about the Rams being set "hard". Sometimes it's hard to train those inexperienced target setters (competitors). Those rams go down hard enough without "hard" setting them. They seem to go over soooooo slow with standard velocity ammo.
