Doesn't that include snorting beer foam through the nostrils while uttering that famous quote?

Thank you bruce keep safe also.bruce m wrote:sharpshooter,
be happy with i moa per mph of wind deflection at 800 yds, and look for good grouping and minimal vert at all ranges.
you can learn wind deflection compensation and do something about it, but bad vert or grouping is beyond control in a string.
back in the day, many bullet shapes were developed by trial and error.
the 2 best were the metford bullet, established to work well by firing many 1,000s of bullets in britain, and the generic american long range bullet
with its sleek elliptical mose.
those guys were not stupid, and would have tried anuthing there was to be tried.
one way to increase b.c. is to lengthen the ogive, but longer than about 1.5 calibres is impossible with cast bullets, and can only be done with jacketed or turned brass alloy bullets.
cast ones bend and slump, and the mass in them causes them the set back, losing their length.
airflow at transonic velocities has proven that other nose shapes are superior to spitzers, at our velocity levels, as discovered by many men who died in the quest for supersonic flight.
one easy way to lift b.c is use a pp bullet, as it does not have drag inducing "speed hu
your weights and bullet lengths are way off what has been proven in the day, and rediscovered in modern times.
if it works, please let us know the what and how of it all.
keep safe,
bruce.
Yes long ogive and high spin rates don't work well with nonuniform home cast bullets. The trick is to ignore military stabilization rates and go for about a Miller 1.5 stabilization at 59deg at sea level. That will still give you a minimum 1.3 stabilization should you want to shoot at -10 degrees (:.
Of course you have to calculate the velocity compensation for mach 1 or greater velocity instead of mach 2.5 (2800 fps). Many bench rest shooters go as low as 1.3 because home cast bullets can be dynamically unstable up around 2 to 2.5 miller stability spin rates.
The point is, you can stabilize a long short nose (round nose) bullet close to 2 inches in Shiloh .50, .45, or .40 rifles with sectional density of .57 and ballistic coefficient of .74 or better; instead of the b.c of .505 for a .45 cal 550 grain that a lot of great marksmen try to compete with variable cross winds. They deserve better!!!. (OF COURSE I SHOOT ONLY P-P BULLETS FOR THE B.C)
Thank you bruce.

Kirk, I just received an email from Lucinda saying the 45 cal is available in 1x18 and the 40 is available in 1x16.Kirk wrote:Sharpshooter28
People call all the time to get twist info., not sure what happened in your case?
50 cal ---- 1x22 left hand or 1x36
44 cal ---- 1x
45 cal ---- 1x18 or 1x16
40 cal ---- 1x16 or 1x14
38 cal ---- Douglas 1x16 or you specify
30 cal ---- Douglas 1x12 or you specify
Kirk,
I would love to believe you. A 1x14 40 cal could equal a 50 cal shooting 1000 grain bullet as far as s.d., b.c. and performance at 1000 yrds with a lot less recoil but I usually do better believing the lady. Also C. Sharps Arms (excuse me) doesn't offer a twist faster than 1x16 in 40 cal but I like their milled (not cast) actions and faster delivery time. But!!, I own only a Shiloh and, at 72 yrs. old, if I live long enough I would like a second Shiloh Sharps.

Why wouldn't you believe Kirk? He is the owner of Shiloh.
There are a few people shooting faster twist .40's in NRA long range BPTR, but not many.

And that's the truth!
I have a 14 twist .40-82 Shiloh.
Think twice about believing what the twist is in a C Sharps barrel.
That clown will put anything he has in stock on his rifles.

I'm a little challenged in ballistic theory so if I see a problem with the holes on the target or iron I just throw the mould in the drawer and order a different one.

...So very true Kurt. Lets not forget though that then the challenge is on to design a rifle and twist around that mystery mould !
