.40-65 Barrel Length?

Post by bucksnort »

Gents,
I'd like to have one of my LREs rebareled in .40-65. It will not be used for any type of competitions (except friendly club matches). Would there be any problem associated with a HVY 32-inch? Thanks.

It will be heavy, perhaps 12 1/2 lbs.

The rifle will be heavy and poorly balanced. It will also foul more easily with the 32 inch barrel. On the plus side, the extra weight will reduce the recoil--but the recoil from a 40-65 is very light anyway, making this a moot point. My take is that you won't like the longer, heavier barrel. I have a 40-70 Straight with a 30 inch Number 1 heavy barrel, and it carries and balances O.K., but I have seen 40-65 Business rifles with 30 inch barrels that were poorly balanced and awkward to carry and shoot. My 30 inch heavy/half 40-65 is a dream to carry and shoot, and I can recommend that configuration. Shoot straight, rdnck.

I have two Shiloh .40-65's, one with a 30" heavy and one with a 32" heavy barrel. The longer barrel works well but I wouldn't want it as an offhand rifle.

They are both very accurate but I would definitely choose a 30" barrel if you are planning any offhand. I would imagine that a 30" half octagon would be the bee's knees.

Get the one that hits the chicken every time you shoot at it.
Sometimes you get the chicken, and sometimes you get the feathers!
