Which 45-70 FL sizing die for PP chamber

Post by MikeT »

Which brand 45-70 FL sizing die is recommended for new cases to fit the 45-70 PP chamber?
I have Lyman dies, will they size down for enough for the PP chamber?

Thanks,
MikeT

Try it and see.
I use a .45-90 FL sizer for my std chamber Shiloh, as you work the brass less.

I don't know which chamber you have, but I can say that in my rifles with Dan T's .45-70 PP chamber ( 0.474" case mouth ) I can use an RCBS FL sizing die and the cases will chamber. In my .45-90 with Dan's PP chamber I full length size them and then take them down a little more with a .45 Colt die and then fireform them.

If full length sizing isn't enough, then maybe the .45 Colt die trick will work for you too.

Chris,
I do not have the rifle yet. My 77 is in production now and it will have the Shiloh PP chamber for the 45-70.
Will your DT PP chamber allow groove diameter bullets to be chambered?

Thanks for your reply.

No, it's for bore diameter bullets only.

My new Shiloh has a 45-70 chamber with a 7 degree leade. I seat my BORE diameter pp'd bullets so that there is only about 1/8" of bullet in the case, and they chamber nicely. Grease groove bullets, such at Lyman's 457125 (a very accurate bullet btw) need to be seated almost to the ogive. So powder capacity is limited to abut 65 gr. Swiss 1 1/2 Fg.
To size my cases tight enough to support the .450" pp'd bullet, I use a .45 ACP die with a 1/2" ID copper pipe sleeve as a stop to get uniform case mouth sizing. I made my own expanding button exactly .450".
Brand new brass gets full length sized in a Lyman FL sizing die, but only for the first firing in this chamber. After that, only the case mouth/neck gets sized.

D. Taylor Sapergia,
I have the 7 degree lead in a couple of my 40 caliber rifles. The 7 degree lead is used in a GG chamber, it is not the PP chamber.
My understanding of the PP chamber is that a groove diameter bullet will not chamber in the PP chamber.

Not sure if the thread I started got submitted correctly, so I'll ask it here. I got my new Saddle rifle last October 2018 and have yet to shoot it. Still trying to figure out the reloading. It's 45-70. I didn't know that there is a special chamber for PP cartridges, so I think I got the standard 45-70 chamber that Shiloh makes. Question: Can I shoot PP cartridges from the rifle chamber that I have? Or am I stuck w/ shooting grease groove bullets? the idea of PP cartridges and less fouling is intriguing.
Also, if I assume my 45-70 bore is .458, what size bullet would be used for a PP cartridge? I assume it would be less than .458

I'd appreciate any feedback to help point me in the right direction.

Robeng, I size Hornady brass with the Lyman die, and use a 452-453 tapered expander from Buffalo Arms. I use a .446 525 or 535 money bullet from BACO
mould cast from 16-1, wrap it in 8 lb paper. Those bullets shoot quite well in my Shiloh with the standard chamber.

Mike my lyman dies size the cases down to where they need just a touch of expanding to seat a bullet wrapped to .450

Thank you Don. I am going to FL size my brass with the Lyman dies.
The rifle is still in production so I have to wait until it arrives before I trim
the cases.

Keep on hav'n fun!

Mike I'm using the Hornady brass right out of the bag, just chamfer the case mouth , then full length size, expand the mouth load and go. No paper rings etc. using the .446 bullet wrapped in Seth Cole 55w, and with 75 grains of OE 2f it shoots really well.
This was shot at 600 yards prone off the x sticks

Mike I use the Lyman 45 short neck size die in my tight chambers for the .45-70, 2.4 and the 2.6

Kurt,
I was hoping that the chamber will be tight enough that neck sizing will not be needed.
I have a taper crimp die for my current 45-70 Highwall with a grease groove chamber, and I will use it if need be.

Mike neck sizing is not the reason I use that die. Most of my chambers are tighter than what Shiloh uses. I use reamers I design for shooting PP bullets and GG bullets will not fit a fired case from my chambers. What I was getting at was I use the short neck sizing die because it's tighter than my full length dies. The taper crimp die sizes the case down enough so it fits for the first firing. Most of the reamers I have made I have also have them grind a size die reamer and I make my own dies.
