22 BPCR targets

What do most of you prefer to shoot ...free standing or Pull reset 22 BPCR targets?

Pull reset.

As I age bending over is getting harder and harder.

There is a downside to the pull reset though. When hit, they disappear fast and they always fall straight back, so less than center hits can be hard to spot. Free falling target hits can be called by how they fall even when the strike was missed by the spotter.

I don't actually shoot matches but I have some targets.

I like the swingers hung by chains. I don't know if in a real setting they would fall, but hits are easy to see.

Repaint instead of reset.

Free standing targets are the only way to go.
I have "rang" multiple reset targets. Oklahoma City, Carpenter and .22 Nationals all have them and unless there is a modification to the rule of hitting a target and it doesn't go down I have decided to not shoot them anymore. Any time you introduce a mechanical system there will be failures. In 2018 I rang the last three rams after running 87 straight lay down animals. Went from scoring well in Master scope to nothing! Shot it this year with no problems but my shooting partners continued to rang animals and they don't count. If you hit em they should score, nuf said. Lay downs always the best.

I had a bigger problem with hitting one and knocking down 2 or 3 at Nationals this year. They aren't infallible, but then neither are the free standing targets.

agree with you 100% percent. Hitting the rail and the chicken falls happened more times then anyone wants to admit. Big problem is many shooters count them!!!

We'll see how our target setter hiring process is going for our Regional BPCR match in sept. I have always liked free standing targets and we have both at Oklahoma city. We'll see what we can do.

Glen,
Have shot your targets at Tornado Alley and Mike modified the "if it don't go down it don't count rule" to if a full bullet strike is clearly on the body of the target, it counts. Same rules at Carpenter, but not Nationals. Seem reasonable to me that you modify the rules when the match has modified the targets. See what you come up with. Again, either targets are fine but .........................................

I like both targets. I have rang free standing targets and I've rang resettable targets, in fact I rang a ram target at this years nationals and yes that one point would have made a major difference but it doesn't matter that it was resettable as it wasn't the best of hits and it failed to fall...that's going to happen on both types of targets. Personally, I do miss seeing the chickens take flight when solidly hit but I love the time savings of the resettable targets as it eliminates the "hunt of targets" by our target setters.

It's a shame a competitor would avoid a match just because of the type of targets used, especially a well organized and ran match. But, I know you "can't please everyone all the time" and remind myself of that statement often but I'd sure like to find some common ground so everyone wants to participate in the 22BPCRA and our matches.

I heard the match directors at nationals tell folks to count it if they hit the rail and the chicken fell. Even heard them say they would change a card that had been turned in where the competitor had hit the rail but didn't count it. I think under that rule, I'm going to start shooting the rail. Probably will get a higher chicken count.

Actually, that is the NRA rule that we also choose to follow. If you shoot at the correct animal in the correct order and it falls over, then you count it. It doesn't matter if it ricochets off the dirt in front and it falls over, you hit the rail and it falls over, you hit the edge of the rail and the spatter knocks it over, or by some freak occurrence lightning strikes it at the same moment you shoot and it falls over, you get to count it. If you want to strategize by attempting to use one of these other methods, be my guest. Myself, I just shoot the chickens. They always fall over then.

Cody, you forgot that if someone Crossfires on the same animal that you are shooting at and at the same instant and it goes down it is judged that your bullet got there first and you get to count the animal. Happens more often than you would imagine.
